From fishing to ferries, the histories of Kyle Harbour and the Kyle Line Railway are inextricably linked. That’s why when we refurbished the Museum 3 years ago we added a whole new gallery focusing on sea and harbour stories. Find out about the special fish trains, see model fishing boats, and view archive photos of getting ‘over the sea to Skye’ before the Skye Bridge. Come and explore! ⚓🐟🛥

Where the railway meets the sea - Kyle really is the end of the line, and what a line it is! Some fun facts
🚂The final 10 miles of the line, completed in 1897, was the most expensive stretch of railway in Britain at the time
🚂 In 1883 a riot erupted in Stromeferry when fishermen tried to shop the unloading of fish on a Sunday
🚂 The Kyle Line was threatened with closure twice – once in the 1960s following the Beeching Report, and again during the 1970s. Local campaigning helped overturn the closure decision in 1974
🚂 The ‘Skye Bogie’ was a steam locomotive specially designed to handle Kyle Line’s steep hills and sharp curves. The last one was scrapped in 1930 as trains became too heavy for them to pull
🚂 The line now carries more than 100,000 passenger journeys a year.
