Flowers
Henry Muhrmann (1854-1916)

Today's #FineArtFriday painting from our collection was donated by Sir William Burrell in 1940. The flowers and leaves are past their best. The reduced lighting, subdued autumn palette and heavy paint application evoke a melancholy. Gentle lighting from a nearby window creates a low key image where predominantly dark colours and tones add depth and atmosphere.

#NationalPoetryDay is a UK-wide celebration that encourages us all to enjoy, discover and share poetry on Thursday the 7th of October. Our very own Elizabeth is reading “The Duel” by Eugene Field. Find out how the gingham dog and the calico cat got on in this poem.
So sit back, relax and enjoy!

Imagine the Beatles touring Scotland! 😮 And stopping off at Kirkcaldy to play at the local Carlton Theatre! They did just that #onthisday in 1963 🎶🤩 The bands on the tour were originally booked to play Kirkcaldy’s Raith Ballroom but the venue was changed at the last minute.
Anna's gran was a Beatles fan and her favourite song was 'Yesterday', so Anna is delighted to be holding an early Beatles programme and signed ‘63 EP. You can catch other groovy 60s memorabilia in our Moments in Time exhibition. Drop by, we're open 10-4 today. 😎

A little #MuseumMonday drama from Elizabeth and Jacqueline 🎭, featuring a pair of percussion pistols that belonged to linen merchant, David Landale, who died #onthisday in 1861. 35 years previously, Landale had been assaulted by Bank of Scotland agent, David Morgan (with a brolly!) which led to Scotland's last fatal duel. Sadly, one of these pistols fired the fatal shot. On 23rd August 1826 Landale survived, Morgan did not.
Landale bought the pair of pistols, the day before the duel, from gunsmith John Thomson of Edinburgh. They came recommended - having already killed a man in a duel in South Queensferry two years previously. The pistols have walnut stocks, steel barrels and decorative mounts and are displayed with their powder flask and lead bullets.

The Ford
George Paul Chalmers (1833–1878)

Nicknamed 'The Angus Rembrandt', G P Chalmers was a master in using light to capture a mood. The dark tree shapes contrast against the cool glow emanating from the low-lying sun. The days are drawing in. The reflections being cast in the water pick up the rich, earthy landscape tones and the diffuse light from the autumnal sky. There's time for quiet reflection - a break from busy activity.

We had a special #MuseumMoment today. Former Kirkcaldy Councillor George Muir shared a grand memory with us - the day he took part in the 'Kirking' of the Council back in 1970. This event was captured in the photo on our museum panel showing the late Provost Henry Alleyne Nicholson, Bailies, Councillors and Town Officer walking down Kirk Wynd to a service in the Old Kirk to inaugurate a new council. Spot young George - circled in our close up image. 🔎🎞️👀
We wish George the very best on his 90th birthday next week! 🎊

With the recent opening of The Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre in Galashiels, we've been inspired to celebrate #WorldTourismDay with a #MuseumMonday post about our very own marvellous Kirkcaldy Tapestry. Designed by Andrew Crummy and overseen by Dorie Wilkie, this Fife gem hangs in our Museum foyer. It was expertly stitched by a team of dedicated volunteers following the visit of the The Great Tapestry of Scotland in the summer of 2015.

See if you can spot the many Kirkcaldy highlights:
Museum & Art Gallery, the War Memorial, references to the coal, linoleum and whaling industry, famous Fifers, artists, events, poems, inventions and iconic designs - they're all there!

My first time on here. What an interesting page - loving all the history. I have been meaning to come to the Kirkcaldy Galleries to see the Peploe's and was hoping I could find out a bit more about his painting of the Lilies. Can anyone help me? Thank you.
Cute wee houseplant cutting plant hanger. Made a mistake with the first one and forgot to use cotton! How could I not remember wool stretches!!!
Sometimes we need to remember we will come through this. "This is the time to be slow, Lie low to the wall Until the bitter weather passes. Try, as best you can, not to let The wire brush of doubt Scrape from your heart All sense of yourself And your hesitant light. If you remain generous, Time will come good; And you will find your feet Again on fresh pastures of promise, Where the air will be kind And blushed with beginning." from the Benedictus: Book of Blessings by John O'Donohue.
I collect and restore old Magic Lantern Slides. Based on the fishing boat registrations this photograph is Kirkcaldy harbour. I've attached the original and the restored versions just for interest
Hi I found this on leven beach. Is it Wemyss pottery? It also looked a bit Russian lol.
Come along to #KirkcaldyGalleries from 12-4pm today and learn how to help give nature a home with Will from #RSPB — with RSPB Scotland Loch Leven Nature Reserve and Kirkcaldy Galleries at Kirkcaldy Galleries.
❗️For my college this year i'm required to get models for my graded unit. My final ideas are inspired by a fashion designer, and I'm creating a portfolio of work where i create fashion makeup inspired by her collections. Week of 14th April- I'm looking for a model with light blonde medium to long length hair, to do a darker/urban style photoshoot with a photographer where i'll be doing makeup, hair, outfit and location. Week of 22th April- I'm also looking for a model with dark brown or black long hair, to do makeup, hair, outfit and location on also. This shoot will be in more of an editorial style! If you'd be interested in helping out with this, please give me a message or comment below for more info. I need reliable models as this is a really important unit for me. Travel costs can be covered by myself if needed!❗️
Fabulous morning with this lovely bunch in Kirkcaldy!! Singing is the best way to start your day so why not come along and join us. There are no auditions, no experience needed and it really doesn’t matter if you think “I can’t sing” - you will have a great fun time and meet lovely people - and often there is cake too. It costs nothing to come for a trial so come and see for yourself 🎵😃🎵😃🎵 Thursdays at Temple Hall Community Centre 10am-12pm www.singingthecity.com
