We were saddened to hear of the passing of Malcolm Le Grice last week.

Malcolm was described by the British Film Institute (BFI) as “probably the most influential modernist filmmaker in British Cinema” and we were so honoured to have held his final exhibition at Velarde in October.

Malcolm leaves an incredible legacy and our thoughts are with Oliver Le Grice and his family at this time.

Bruce Munro’s beautiful work Sky - Time Place works wonderfully in a bedroom or living room setting creating a tranquil and peaceful environment.

Land, Sea and Sky are three of the most recent works in Bruce Munro’s Time and Place series. They are further explorations of the theme, taking small sections of many landforms, seas and skies from different times and locations to explore a universality of elements.

Have you seen Bruce Munro’s Magical Fireflies in the Velarde sculpture garden yet?

The largest of the light installations in this exhibition, Fireflies, is a meandering stream of light, a series of 91 fibre-optic shower sculptures inspired by two works of fiction; Kim by Rudyard Kipling and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, both of which feature rivers as metaphors for the spiritual and physical journey of all living creatures.

Why not enjoy them from the comfort of the Velarde apartments The Art Loft and The Atelier Apartment.

Bruce Munro’s Time and Place series seeks to distil the emotional essence associated with specific images by taking a suite of photographs in a 360-degree arc and transforming them into a series of dots of pure colour.

The resulting circles of graded hues are both a reminder of the original images and a route towards meditating on the emotions associated with them.

SEAGLASS, 2023
Richlite, sea glass pendants, fibre, light source
130 x 130 x 11.2 cms

Sea Glass - T&P Spiral is an iteration of the Time and Place concept. We all travel through space and time (our life) expressing ourselves in an infinite variety of ways.

In this instance a young friend of Munro’s Sophie Witt, collects and transforms sea-sculpted fragments of glass into beautiful jewellery. Her journey to create these crafted pieces is one small expression of her life. Munro endeavour’s to illuminate and elevate moments such as these.

‘I collected most of this sea glass at Seaham beach near Durham. This beach is famous for sea glass as it was once home to the largest bottle works in Britain, which operated until the 1920s. All of the waste glass was tipped into the sea, which means the sea glass is over 100 years old at this location.’ - Sophie Witt

How you been to see the amazing yet?

Field of Light was originally conceived in 1992 during a trip through central Australia. The very first version was sown in the field behind Munro’s home in England in 2004. Since then, it has appeared for short spans of time in locations across the world, always different, an organic piece that has stretched across fields, along city parks and through forested land.

Bruce Munro’s newest work is a series of pieces he has come to call c-scales. They are a product of five years’ research and experience, and an amalgam of several areas of exploration.

Start Line was inspired by the turquoise hues of the Salcombe estuary. Making art is often a circular pathway in life’s journey; at its best it is childhood looking, interpretation and creating as an older person.

Krion backboard, Formica discs

In 2013 Munro became aware of the painting of the pioneering abstract Korean artist Kim Whanki (1913-1974). Whanki’s later paintings from his New York period held a particular resonance for Munro. They were calligraphic and spoke to Munro of musical notation and binary code. Ideas of messaging danced in his mind; he remembered the illuminated form of Morse code, a system of dots and dashes made in long and short blinks of light. He began employing Morse code to translate texts, so that he could produce both pattern and a decipherable message. Munro loves the notion of embedding personally meaningful information into his work in such a literal and distilled manner.
