“My newest work is a series of pieces I have come to call c-scales. They are a product of five years’ research and experience, and an amalgam of several areas of exploration.
In 2013 I became aware of the painting of the pioneering abstract Korean artist Kim Whanki (1913-1974). Whanki’s later paintings from his New York period held a particular resonance for me. They were calligraphic and spoke to me of musical notation and binary code. Ideas of messaging danced in my mind; I remembered the illuminated form of Morse code, a system of dots and dashes made in long and short blinks of light. I began employing Morse code to translate texts, so that I could produce both pattern and a decipherable message. I loved the notion of embedding personally meaningful information into my work in such a literal and distilled manner.” - Bruce Munro

Malcolm Le Grice Selected Works 1960 – 2024

The British Film Institute (BFI) describes Malcolm Le Grice (b.1940) as “probably the most influential modernist filmmaker in British cinema”.
Born in Plymouth and a resident of Thurlestone between 1999 and 2022, Malcolm Le Grice returns to Devon this Autumn for a very special exhibition at Velarde. DNA : AND presents video installations, selected 2D work, including original and recently rediscovered early paintings and drawings, and limited edition prints from some of his most celebrated films.
Le Grice’s work interrogates the complex relationships between the processes of filmmaking and the politics of perception. Exploding the structures of conventional, linear, narrative-driven cinema, his films set out to question what it is that happens when the spectator engages with something, or as he puts it “the moment of encounter”.

This exhibition shows how artists in diverse locations, working with diverse mediums, are using the power of colour to challenge and inspire us.
Colour is a medium with which to enhance line and form; it can be an expressive language that connects the viewer with places and ideas. It can also be used to define complex shapes and geometries. In whatever way artists work with colour differing palettes can exert significantly different influences on our responses to art in all its forms.
