🌿Rowan tree and red thread🌿

Did you know the rowan tree has a special place in Scottish folklore?

For centuries, people believed rowans could ward off bad luck and protect homes and families. Today, the rowan tree in Weaver's Cottage garden continues to connect us with these fascinating traditions.

🌿From garden to loom 🌿

Did you know that many dyes used at the cottage were actually plant-based? One such technique was to use rhubarb, which we still grow in the Weaver's Cottage garden

Rhubarb creates a golden yellow dye or, with the help of some soda crystals, a vibrant red-pink too! The leaves of the plant can also come in handy - called a mordant, it helps bind the natural colour to the fabric! So no part of the plant truly goes to waste!

🪡A pattern that's stood the test of time🪡

We're so fortunate to house a collection of tartan samples meticulously crafted by Willie Meikle, one of the last weavers in Kilbarchan village.

Each tartan, with its distinct thread count and vibrant colours, is a testament to his skill.

You never know, you might even find your family tartan among them - be sure to keep an eye out on your next visit!
