Fascinating Facts Friday

What do you know about the Ribblehead Viaduct?

Lots of people know it's in the Yorkshire Dales

Some people know it was built between 1870 and 1875 as part of the Settle–Carlisle Railway.

Fewer people know it was designed by engineer John Sydney Crossley, has 24 magnificent arches that stretch for around 400 metres and rise 32 metres above the valley floor and that it is 4 metres higher at one end than the other!!

You can find out all this information and more, plus have a go at building your own arch or calling the stationmaster on his rotary dial telephone at the Ribblehead Station Visitor Centre. It's completely free to visit and we are open from 9am to 4pm every day. There's our fabulous little tearoom on site too so time for lunch or tea and cake whilst you are there!

It's all dog friendly too - you might even get to meet Molly (our model in the photo!)

Just an advance notice that we will have to close on Monday next week as Electricity NorthWest are shutting off our power supply for the day - Yey!

But we are here all weekend and will be back again on Tuesday from 9am so please be sure to schedule your visit around this major inconvenience!!

Nipped across to the Wild Ingleborough reserve for a look around and then caught a double bubble of freight on the way back. One shunting and loading at Ribblehead and one loaded from Horton heading up to Blea Moor to 'turn around' and come back again.
Love to see the line being used by freight trains
