Horsham Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 4pm and on Bank Holiday weekends. Horsham Museum was founded in 1893 by the Free Christian (now Unitarian) Church and became part of Horsham District Council in 1974. It is supported by The Friends of Horsham Museum.

For our Friday Museum Fact this week we have the very first publication published by the Horsham Museum Society.

You may think it would be on local history or looking at the town's flora and fauna - but no.

It was, to give it its full title - ‘American Notes; being Fifteen Months’ Impressions and Observations in Kansas’!

This was a talk given to the Society in July 1898 by member Mr William Bowyer Pain. It was subsequently printed in pamphlet form and could be bought for 6d.

It included a detailed account of a cyclone Mr Pain encountered, saying he had never known what real terror was until that day!

There was quite a bit of interest recently when we featured the former Black Horse Hotel, so we have another couple of photos for our stroll through 1960s .

The first is early in the 60s and the second is 1965 with scaffolding ready for demolition that year.

We'd love to hear any memories of the hotel. What was it like inside and did anyone attend the Wedgwood School of Dancing based there?

It was in 2002 that the amazing sundial in the Forum was commissioned, and in October the following year the Queen officially unveiled it.

It was designed by Lorne McKean and Edwin Russell, based on the stories told in the Heritage Lottery funded Millennium Trail of 32 plaques throughout the District.

The sundial tells the District's history from the age of dinosaurs through to the impact of Gatwick Airport.

Did you know Denne Road Cemetery in Horsham plays an important part in the town's historic heritage?

It holds the graves of many of Horsham's most distinguished residents.

It was opened in 1852 and contains the graves of members of the Hurst family, Captain Thomas Honywood and there's a stone that commemorates John James Charman who died on the Titanic.

The Museum website has some fascinating information about the Cemetery, as well as its abundant wildlife.

When the Museum first started in 1893 several photos were added to the collection.

Our Friday fascinating Museum fact this week is that the pictures included this one of an abnormal potato!

At the end of the 19th Century, Museum's were more interested in gathering objects of general interest rather than local artefacts.

The Museum re-opens on January 5 next year with plenty of Horsham-related objects on view!

The photos are the same row of shops from different angles.

Merrythought Cafe was always a popular venue, but who remembers Ken Preece's outfitters? There's also Horsham Dry Cleaners.

This day saw the opening of the ODEON Cinema in North Street, Horsham, in 1936.

It was the 26th in a franchise run by Oscar Deutsch (hence the name – Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation).

The cinema opened with a showing of Little Lord Fauntleroy, along with music from the band of His Majesty’s Scots Guards.

Audiences tailed off in the 60s and, after a few years as a Mecca Bingo Club, the building lay empty and was demolished in November 1981.

This week marks both the birth and death (69 years apart) of one of Horsham's most enterprising residents!

Thomas Honywood (7 October 1819 – 5 October 1888) was an archaeologist, photographer and was captain of the local fire brigade and an amateur artist.

He invented a photo-chemical printing technique which transferred images of natural objects onto various surfaces which he exhibited in 1885 at The International Inventions Exhibition in London (see photo).

He is buried in Denne Road Cemetery, Horsham.

For our weekly Museum fascinating fact we reveal the first woman to take on the role of Curator!

The current incumbent, Nikki Caxton, is the latest of only a few women to be in charge down the years.

First, though, was Ruth Albery (pictured) who took over in 1921 and held office until 1926.

It was an honorary position then and Ruth, sister of saddler and local historian William Albery, remained a member of the Museum Society for many years.

After a busy life (she was a keen churchgoer and non-militant Suffragette), she died, aged 92.

On our 1960s stroll through for we're in the West Street/BIshopric area.

The Black Horse Hotel (on the edge of West Street) is being demolished but Gilbert Rice is doing well, as is Merrythought (just visible).

Our next photo is a few years later - the Hotel has gone and the new building is awaiting its new tenants.

Anyone remember the Black Horse Hotel being knocked down?
