Due to essential maintenance work, our Gallery, WW1 and WW2 Classrooms will be temporarily closed on Friday 14th and part of Saturday 15th August.

While access is limited, we are reducing admission to £4 per person. Under 5s and carers continue to have free entry as usual.

We expect the classrooms to reopen on Saturday afternoon, when normal admission of £6.50 will resume.

The rest of the museum remains open as usual, and we look forward to welcoming you.

👢If these tiny boots could talk, what stories would they tell?

We don't know much about these beautiful little doll's boots, one of a small collection including shoes, ballet slippers and wellingtons (pound coin included for scale). They are skillfully made of soft red suede that zips up.

Although likely to be twentieth century, as many of the shoes include plastic elements, they are a lovely example of the care and attention lavished on beloved dolls' wardrobes thoughout history from simple scrap ragdolls to rich bisque masterpieces.

👗We hold a number of dolls and their clothes at the Museum, from various eras, and each one is evidence of a child's cherished plaything. Although a century has passed since Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote A Little Princess, the power of the main character's doll's wardrobe of "velvet, muslin, and lace frocks, coats, hats, furs, and beautiful lace-trimmed underclothes" remains a fascinating window onto the past.

🏕️ Ready for an adventure? What would you have discovered inside The Scout magazine in 1935?

📚An edition of The Scout magazine, dating from 9th February 1935. The Boy Scout movement was inspired by Baden-Powell, an army officer who had served in the British Army in both India and South Africa.

In 1908 he published Scouting for Boys which led to the scouting movement, and in 1910 along with his sister Agnes, he also founded the Girl Guides. The Scout magazine was published by Cyril Arthur Pearson April 1908, only weeks after Baden-Powell's own work, and as an independent publication did not always co-incide with Baden-Powell's own views on scouting.

By the 1930s it was marketed as "Every Boy's Weekly" and was beginning to move away from focusing solely on scouting. Instead it was filled with stories, advertisements and tales of daring-do to inspire its readers with the spirit of adventure.

The magazine folded in 1966, and various similar publications have been attempted at various times, most notably The Scouter (1923-1971) and Scouting (1971-2020).
