Everyone at Bellingham Heritage Centre would like to wish His Majesty King Charles III a very happy ‘official’ birthday.
As we celebrate our rich local heritage and history, we also recognise the important role the Monarchy continues to play in the life of our nation and communities.
We hope His Majesty enjoys a wonderful day filled with happiness and good health.

🏰 Bellingham Castle – a grassy hill beside Demesne Farm... but what was it really?
Over the years, many stories have been told about this mysterious mound on the edge of Bellingham.
🤔 Was it...

A Pulpit?
It was to spread the Word of God
That brought Cuthbert this way;
The people sat around the hill
To hear his words and pray.
They thought that Cuthbert was a Saint
And wanted him to stay;
So Cuthbert gave them Cuddy's Well,
Which still flows to this day.

🏨 A Hotel?
The Bellinghams built upon a hill,
A mansion big and high,
Where they could entertain the King,
When he came riding by.
But when the King returned one day,
He found that they had fled;
And in their place he found a town,
Called Bellingham instead.

⚔️ A Stronghold?
And if the Reivers came to town
To spread fear and alarm;
The locals all climbed up the hill,
To keep themselves from harm.
And just who were these Reivers?
Families who lived against the odds:
Charlton, Dodd and Armstrong,
Milburn, Graham and Robson;
Mitford, Wake and Burns,
Carruthers, Crozier too—
And many more besides!
