Here’s my recent portrait of Leo, Lacey and Max!

Triple portraits always present their own challenges. The main one being that your margin for error is small. You can be 20+ hours into the drawing and still have an entire dog left to draw. One mistake and it’s a LOT of work down the drain.

Fortunately, with enough patience this drawing came together like I’d hoped. Getting the portraits aligned in a way that worked took some time but I’m really happy with how things ended up.

What’s next? Well another triple portrait is coming soon.

Here’s another one of my latest portraits. Meet Betsy - who posed a bit of a challenge with her fur being mostly white. It’s drawings like these that really make you focus on using graphite only where necessary! Otherwise things can start to look too dark very quickly.

This drawing was finished off a custom frame and delivered in time to be a special gift.

It’s been a while.

I haven’t had much time to sit down and draw recently with what seems like one million other things going on in the background. But I’m still here, with more commissions coming soon.

In the meantime, here’s a comparison of Clyde’s portrait compared to the reference photo. It’s always really rewarding (and slightly) scary, to combine the two images and see how right (or wrong) I got it.

I always like to share the process of creating my drawings. Turning a blank piece of paper into something lifelike can seem impossible, but I always find it easier to break the drawing into sections. Finishing one area at a time helps me focus on a smaller part of the picture, and therefore it becomes less overwhelming.

Here’s a breakdown of how Clyde’s portrait come together. I’m currently taking commissions for the next few months 🎁

SWIPE ➡️➡️➡️

I follow the same process for each portrait no matter the subject. Start with the eyes and then build out from there, section by section. It’s a way of working that I’ve always been comfortable with and helps me work without smudging what I’ve already done.

The first of my Christmas commissions and one of my all time favourites. This is Clyde, an A3 portrait drawn in his memory 🎁

This was a technically challenging piece due to its size, the markings and textures involved. After many hours of concentration, I couldn’t be happier with the result!

So it’s been a while. This time of year is always tricky as I have a lot of drawing work to do, but nothing I can post! Each one is secret gift that has to wait for Christmas Day 🤫
