In 1973 the gallery owner became seriously ill with leukemia, and was sent down to Bart’s hospital, in London as part of a medical trial. Such was his treatment that at one occasion his weight fell to 5 stone, which for a 30 year old man was quite ominous. When his treatment allowed he decided to venture out and took a black cab and asked where he could go to see something insp

irational. Upon walking into the Tate the first thing he saw and found great inspiration in was the controversial Karl Andre’s bricks. It was the first of many visits. Whether it was the escape and inspiration from the art or the treatment he was the only person in his batch of 12 to survive and to this day . It has always been his desire to give something back and to build a gallery in Herefordshire where people could experience great art for free. All profits will be donated to St Barts Medical research.

Don't miss! Live Glassblowing with E&M Glass 15th and 16th August

Go behind the scenes with E&M Glass, one of Britain’s leading second-generation glassmaking studios, and experience the excitement of live glassblowing as professional artists transform molten glass into beautiful contemporary artworks before your eyes.

This is a rare opportunity to discover techniques seldom seen outside a working studio, gain insight into the creative process, and ask questions throughout the session. Whether you’re interested in contemporary art, curious to see how glass artworks are created, or simply looking for a memorable day out, this is an experience not to be missed.

Sessions take place at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm on Saturday 15 August and Sunday 16 August 2026.

If you're looking for something a little different this Friday, join us for a day of contemporary art, inspiring conversations and beautiful surroundings at Canwood Gallery.

🟡 11am–1pm – Meet Sue Thorne, whose beautifully atmospheric fused glass artworks are inspired by the landscapes of the Brecon Beacons and the changing seasons.

🟡 1pm–3pm – Join Cathy Lee for an informal talk exploring the fascinating world of stained glass, with insights into its history, techniques and enduring beauty.

It's a wonderful opportunity to meet the artists, ask questions and discover the stories behind their work.

While you're here, experience Ed Elliott's remarkable solo exhibition, featuring new and unseen works, tactile wooden originals, bronzes and specially created pieces, together with The Canwood Guardian, his striking centrepiece created in memory of Canwood Gallery founder Stephen Dale.

Some artists leave behind beautiful work. Others leave behind a lasting legacy. Nancy Sutcliffe achieved both.

Internationally recognised for her extraordinary engraved and gilded glass, Nancy's work combined remarkable technical precision with compassion, curiosity and quiet humanity. Following her death in 2025, her influence continues to inspire artists and collectors around the world.

We've been honoured to tell Nancy's story in a new feature on our website, exploring the life and work of an exceptional artist whose generosity touched so many within the glass community.

As part of Through the Glass Lens, Canwood Gallery is proud to present a special selection of Nancy's work. Proceeds from sales will support Nancy's Fund in aid of Cancer Research UK, helping to continue her remarkable legacy.

One exhibition. 50 remarkable works.

Ed Elliott's solo exhibition is now open at Canwood Gallery, bringing together sculptures that explore form, material and the human presence with extraordinary sensitivity and craftsmanship.

From exquisitely tactile wooden originals to the latest works from the Ed Elliott Bronze Collection, the exhibition also includes a number of special new pieces created exclusively for this show. Each work offers a glimpse into Elliott's evolving practice, where the natural grain, character and history of the wood are not hidden but celebrated. Every sculpture carries the story of the tree from which it came, becoming a collaboration between nature and the artist.

Whether you're discovering Ed's work for the first time or following his artistic journey, this is an exhibition not to be missed.

As a gallerist, every exhibition is difficult to say goodbye to. Months of planning, the hard work of installation, the privilege of getting to know the artist and each artwork in detail, and the wonderful conversations with visitors become part of the journey. Then, before you know it, it's over.

The Steve Brooks exhibition goodbye has been one of the hardest.

It has been an extraordinary privilege to experience the stories behind Steve Brooks' remarkable body of work, to witness the phenomenal support from our community, and to work alongside Veronica and Paul, on such a special exhibition, all while supporting the incredible work of St Michael's Hospice.

Thanks to your generosity, Steve Brooks' exhibition will raise close to £4,000 for the hospice. We are all immensely grateful to everyone who made this possible.

A special thank you to Annabelle Oppenheimer for the glorious flowers, Joe Sage for his invaluable help with the installation, everyone who kindly gave Veronica lifts to and from the gallery, and to every single person who visited, collected a piece, shared the exhibition, or simply helped spread the word.

Over the past few weeks, Becoming has celebrated the changing seasons and the quiet beauty that surrounds us every day, reminding us to pause, observe and appreciate the extraordinary in the everyday. It has been a privilege to share Jane's thoughtful work with so many visitors.
