For more than twenty years volunteers have been collecting and researching the history and archaeology of this fascinating corner of Suffolk. Spend some time with the displays which will take you across 10,000 years, from the earliest settlers in the Blyth Valley to the busy hub of malting, brewing and agricultural land which was the town in Victorian times.

The u3a Local History Group have been researching the Quay Street area and this interesting talk shares their latest discoveries
We will be looking at the highs and lows of the development and construction of the Blyth Navigation. There were many triumphs and challenges! We include the interesting characters who were involved and some fascinating discoveries that have been made during the research.

The Blythe Valley Dwile Flonkers were unbeatable three years running, 1968-1969-1970
Their trophy will be on display at the Museum, at the Railway Station, from this Friday, 12 June. A chance for modern Flonkers to see an historic Flonking item and to remember the original team some 55 years ago.

Dr PETRUS JOHANNES DE NYSSEN
A Halesworth doctor in his times 1887 – 1936
Dr Petrus Johannes De Nyssen was a pillar of Halesworth society for nearly 50 years. What brought him from his native South Africa to a small town in Suffolk, and what does his story tell us about the economic and social history of his times?
This talk gives a preview of a study to be published in The Suffolk Review in August. In it, Ann Shearer draws extensively on contemporary newspaper accounts as well as other published sources about Halesworth and the history of medical services to evoke both the man and the world he lived and worked in. There are stories about individuals which illuminate the way people lived and the attitudes of the times, as well as glimpses of Halesworth’s social life in peacetime and at war. Ann finds these both fascinating and instructive and hopes many others with an interest in local history will too.

Stewarding in the Museum is one of the most important roles there is. They meet visitors, answer questions and helping them with their research.

Due to sickness and relocation of volunteers we are short of stewards, so if you are interested email us or better pop in sometime. WE are open all day this Saturday.

After an extensive winter closing, in which new displays have been created and existing displays have been updated, the Halesworth & District Museum will be re-opening at 10am this Saturday. There is a new railway display, Halesworth in ten historical items, the Ho**er family, Early 20th century Halesworth and new and never seen items.
Looking forward to see you there.

The Museum has a remarkable collection of Iron Age Gold Coins from Blythburgh. We have a special viewing of the coins on Thursday 10 July in the Museum at 6:30pm.
The viewing is aimed at mainly for Blythburgh residents, but all are welcome. Numbers are limited so please book in advance by emailing [email protected].
