FLOCK - Community inspired exhibition. Currently on show until 19th September.

Two of the fascinating textiles artworks in our current exhibition FLOCK speak of geographical and family communities and the connected stories woven within each stitch and thread. Both are currently on display and are well worth a visit to see in person.

Crochet artwork:

'The Glottenham Blanket' - 150cm by 150cm Acrylic and wool yarn. Created by Antonia Chitty.

"The Glottenham blanket is based on the geography of the land surrounding Glottenham Manor and the old castle on the site in Robertsbridge. Through the gathering of stories from those who currently work on the land, this freeform crochet piece interweaves memory and community. Within the stitches fields, hedgerows and animals can be found, along with the silhouettes of women, representing those that have lived and worked on the site, in both the past and present."

Quilt hanging:

'Dear Mum-70 Years Young' - 150cm x 110cm Quilted textile. Created by Japonica Dudley, Norma Glover, Sarah Drew, Martha Speed, Charlotte Drew and Karen Drew. We are sisters - 3 living in Nottingham, 1 in Leicestershire, 1 in North Yorkshire and 1 in Sussex.

"Our dear Mum ( Isabelle Louise) taught the seven of us to sew when we were children and stitching is something that has unified and assisted us throughout our varied lives for more than 80 years!

Despite living miles apart ,we came together in 1996 to create this celebratory quilt for Isabelle's 70th Birthday. She lived happily and independently until almost 94- always sewing, crafting and doing an Art Degree in her 80s!

Her 7 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren have all got art and creativity at the centre of their lives. This quilt of family folklore records where we lived, the garden, the produce, the events, the hilarity and the achievements she inspired. We enjoy a feeling of family support and co-operation everytime we look at it."

Gallery North is open 10am - 1pm on Tues & Weds and 10am to 4pm on Thurs to Sat.
