Take a look at this beautiful All British Valor Oil Heater! 🤩 Do you have a memory of these? They produced by way of a reservoir of paraffin drawn through a dipping wick to a burner. Skilfully made from black enamelled metal, they were largely produced for domestic use, and were all the rage in the Roaring 1920s! ♨️
Thanks to SCRAN for sharing this today! 👍🙌

As 2021 draws to a close, we finish our countdown to the new year with a look back at COP26.
Climate Emergency was explored at John Muir’s Birthplace through the exhibition John Muir Earth Planet Universe. John Muir’s Birthplace was the starting point for the COP26 Pilgrimage which followed the John Muir Way to Glasgow as participants reflected on the climate and ecological crisis ahead of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties. Understanding from this will be used to refresh some of the main exhibition at John Muir’s Birthplace as a ‘Call For Climate Action’.
Day 9 of our countdown to 2022, looking back at the last year in East Lothian Museums. At the end of September, Doors Open Day weekend at Dunbar Town House saw visitor numbers nearly triple as people booked in for a guided tour of the historic cells and Council Chamber with volunteers from Dunbar & District History Society. We also made this short video tour of the building for those who could not come in person.

Day 8 of our countdown to 2022, reflecting on the last year in our Museums. International visitors returned to John Muir’s Birthplace in late summer as they combined family time with a visit to the museum. A first since the start of the pandemic.
Day 7 of our Countdown to 2022 . Earlier this year we were very excited to host Discovering Ancient Egypt, a National Museums Scotland Touring Exhibition at John Gray Centre, Haddington. This exhibition brought together fascinating objects and hidden stories from the collections of National Museums Scotland, uncovering how ancient Egypt captivated Scotland over 200 years ago.

Day 6 of our countdown to 2022. Today we relive the launch of Poems to Prestongrange. This book was the culmination of weekly workshops during the summer of 2019 that explored Scotland's first industrial estate and the stories of those who passed through, from monks to miners, from pit ponies to potters. The book is available at the Prestongrange Visitor Centre Shop.
Thinking of taking a Boxing day walk? For day 5 of our countdown to 2022 we are celebrating that the John Muir Way long distance walking and cycling route had lots of completers collecting their certificates at John Muir’s Birthplace during the year.
