“Oak props driven deep into the mud. Seaweed licks the waterlogged legs where a young man picks whelks into a bucket and gulls peck at cod heads, their milky eyes track the crow’s shadow across the long curve of the seawall.

Salt scab.

Colied ropes.

Creels.

‘How’s the hips and knees?’

‘Ach, no good. Too old for the op’.

‘Had to put diesel in the stove to get it going’.

‘Any milk in the fridge?’

‘No. Cider?’

Waterland

Last couple of weeks, closes 22 June.
Open Tues-Sat 11-4pm, Sun 12-4pm.

“Early morning. High Tide. A thin veil of cloud promises to lift to reveal a bright, shiny day. A few Methil men are already on the seawall fishing – cod and mackerel I’m told, no luck as yet. The still air allows sound to travel across the docks – voices, lorries, a small boats engine coughing, the gentle lapping of water against the pier. Warm concrete to sit on and draw the old jetty. I am astonished by the number of plants that have taken up residence in nooks and crannies of split concrete and rotting wood, where dockan, scurvy grass and birds foot trefoil seem out of place, out on a limb. I walk to the end and look out to sea. ‘Catch anything?’ I ask. ‘Naw… nearly caught a crab, this big but it fell off. I’ll call it a day soon.’ ‘Me too’, I say.”

Waterland

Open Sun 12-4pm.

“This body of work is, on the surface, concerned with landscape. At the outset this was true, and still is, yet is has become something other too.

The title is clear, in that the two places on which I have turned my gaze are, as the name suggests water and land – Rannoch Moor and Methil docks. Both the bog and the long wooden piers could be said to be neither fully land or water, they inhabit both. And yet alongside both landscapes also exist expressions of uncertainty and vulnerability, questioning how one might navigate these landscapes.

The works can be viewed as a set for a cast of actors, to contemplate the moves they might make across these spaces.

By paring back the image to, in some sense, an ‘essential-ness’ what remains is a crossing back and forth between a person and the landscape, a rhythm of movement and thought, a metaphorical place, a landscape of something other.”

All work is available to view online but it is well worth seeing it all together in the gallery.
