We are smiling as we are happy to be deep into phase two of our schools project.🤗
We are refining the content, sourcing high quality images and digitalising content. We are writing the content entirely from scratch for the schools exhibit..
By the end of the week we hope it’s all done so we can then tweak and proof read before going to quote at the end of September.. to ensure the new exhibit is in place by reopening 2024. 💃🏼

Thank you to the hard work from the small group of volunteers making this happen. ❤️

We looking forward to catching up with our trial schools soon.

A proud day at the Barn. ☺️

We welcomed 21 Beavers and cubs, aged 8-10 from Normandy today.
They were guided through the Barns history by our very own Richard Souchard. Who started with the black death. The Kids were captivated.🤓

We played games, We looked at architecture, geology and geography. We finished with the children writing postcards to a family or friend that might not have been to the barn sharing some exciting facts.

It has been a fascinating evening understanding the topics the children most engaged with continuing to help us build our content for our new exhibit. Exciting times.

A milestone achieved today.

Do you love the Great Barn? Do you believe it’s a place that school age children should be visiting: To understand our local history.
put into context the local connection to Roman and saxon history? We do to. 😄
that is why we are investing in
A new internal exhibit which will benefit all visitors to the Barn.

Wanborough Schools Programme

What is this?
We want to host school excursions to be able to share the rich history with young people to support their learning and to spark an interest in heritage. 😄

How will this happen?
We need to undertake some changes to the current exhibit.
For example, we will be making the exhibition double sided one side relevant to primary school age
And the other for the full exhibit.
We currently have an excellent informative video about the history of the Barn but now embarking on an animated version
Relevant to the curriculum.😃

How are we doing?
We have raised an amazing 55% 🥳of the funds we require to make this project happen. Thank you to anyone who has supported us so far.
Borough Council have pledged 5k, the full amount they can offer any project. We are delighted. 🙌🏻

If you would like to pledge and haven’t yet or you would like to know more or get involved, please message us or visit
The link at www.spacehive.com/schools-programme

Thank you to everyone who has backed us. It’s much appreciated.

This week we are celebrating the women who trained for the SOE here in Wanborough Today the spot light on:
Yvonne Cormeau, born Beatrice Yvonne Biesterfeld (18 December 1909 – 25 December 1997), code name Annette, was an agent of the United Kingdom's clandestine organization, the Special Operations Executive (SOE), in World War II. She was the wireless operator for the Wheelwright network led by George Starr in southwestern France from August 1943 until the liberation of France from N**i German occupation in September 1944. The purpose of SOE was to conduct espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in occupied Europe against the Axis powers. SOE agents allied themselves with French Resistance groups and supplied them with weapons and equipment parachuted in from England.

We are celebrating all of the SOE women that trained here in Wanborough. Today a spotlight on: Diana Rowden
Her training report described her as "not very agile", but with "plenty of courage", and "physically quite fit". One of her best subjects was fieldcraft, in which she "did some excellent stalks". She was "a very good shot, not at all gun-shy. Gr***de throwing, very good".[8] Her instructor found her "very conscientious" and "a pleasant student to instruct". Her commandant's report described her as a "strange mixture. Very intelligent in many ways but very slow in learning any new subject". She had trouble with technical details and her signalling was described as a grief to herself and others, not worth while persevering with as it only discourages her. She hates being beaten by any subject, so must have got through a lot of hate down here."[8] He concluded, "I think she has enjoyed the course and could be useful.

We are celebrating all of the women who trained here in Wanborough as part of the SOE. A spotlight today on: Éliane Sophie Plewman
In mid-February 1943, Plewman joined the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and was accepted on 25 February 1943 for training to serve as an "agent in the field". Plewman signed the Official Secrets Act on 29 March 1943 and a second time on 19 April 1943 (this time as second lieutenant Auxiliary Territorial Service) and commenced training at Wanborough Manor at the start of May 1943.[6][3] Despite her sylph-like figure and tiny frame – she was just over five feet tall – Plewman took the same training course near Inverness as the men did, showing fierce determination in every exercise.[7] She learnt weapons handling, hand-to-hand combat, techniques for sabotage, clandestine survival, security, orientation, radio communications.[7] Plewman also learnt how to kill with – or without – a weapon, how to handle explosives and detonators, sabotage railway lines, blow up trains, take on a new identity, improvise answers to any question, invent a plausible past and cover story, including a likely occupation, without ever giving herself away or contradicting herself.[7] It was with flying colours that Plewman passed the psychological tests set for future agents by the various officers in charge of evaluating candidates, tests which assessed their determination and mental fortitude.

Happy International Woman’s Day.

We are celebrating all the amazing women who trained here in Wanborough as part of the SOE. A spotlight on one:
Noor-un-Nisa Inayat Khan, GC (1 January 1914 – 13 September 1944), also known as Nora Inayat-Khan and Nora Baker, was a British resistance agent in France in World War II who served in the Special Operations Executive (SOE).[1] The purpose of SOE was to conduct espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in countries occupied by the Axis powers, especially those occupied by N**i Germany. SOE agents allied themselves with resistance groups and supplied them with weapons and equipment parachuted in from England.
An amazing heroic lady.

Happy Sunday, What a fantastic Day yesterday. We think this visitor has summed it up perfectly.

“We have just had an excellent couple of hours visiting your heritage event. The displays were first class. Including so much history and giving both the local and national context was tremendously interesting. Thank you to all your team who were welcoming and helpful at all times. The cafe was very good and the church displays were beautiful”

Saturday 2:30pm -The Newton Brothers: from cabaret artists to avenging agents
Sunday 11:00 Captain Willie Grover-Williams: Grand Prix winner and secret(?) agent
