In celebration of recovery month we are delighted to be part of the annual Creative Recovery Inverclyde event this Friday which includes a screening of their latest film at the Waterfront cinema followed by performances and refreshments at the Wyllieum.

*Facing the Tide* Lucy Gordon

This new body of work incorporates aspects of portraiture and sea life, directly inspired by the stunning location of the Wyllieum.

Lucy Gordon is a graduate of the Fine Art Painting department from Glasgow School of Art.

Working from her home studio, Lucy’s art uses a combination of found imagery and fabricated characters to create portraits that swerve from the surreal to the sublime. Working primarily in oil paints, her subjects invite and inspire us to imagine their lives, familiar yet fictional, inscrutable and obscure; allowing us to create our own narratives about the work.

Lucy shows her work regularly in Glasgow and has had paintings exhibited in Hastings, Paris and London. She was also shortlisted for the Scottish Portrait Awards 2024 and the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 2024.

Featuring a screening of films from the RSA200 Moving Image Programme at the Waterfront Cinema (adjacent to the Wyllieum) plus Q&A with Ronald Forbes RSA RGI and Ken Currie RSA.

The Wyllieum will be open before the screening to visit our current exhibitions and again afterwards for a drinks reception.

One of the short films available in our screening room at the Wyllieum features Douglas Gordon reminiscing about conversations he had with George Wyllie about the universe and George’s belief that it was ultimately ❓shaped.

Around the same time in 2023 that Douglas was being filmed, NASA did indeed find a distinct ❓shaped cosmos.

Evidence indeed of “Synenergezetics” as George phrased his own understanding of interconnectedness.

Tricephalos for the Clyde by Anoushka Vinden, . Charcoal on beach found buoy. Around 45cm diameter. 2026.

“Digging into the history of Clyde myth, I found reference to a wonderful three-headed Celtic sculpture. It was unearthed near the source of the river, and in her 1974 paper, Anne Ross suggested it may have been a protector of the Clyde, and possibly even a consort of the mythical Clotha.
I liked the echo of Mary’s head, close to the nod at Celtic head-worship. Crowns and heads....”

Our Outreach Department ran two workshops recently led by artist who is currently exhibiting in Gallery One, and participants from our regular Wednesday and Thursday groups.

We used a mix of chemicals and salt to speed up the rusting process on steel objects. These were then transferred through direct contact onto fabrics or paper, to create stains that echo the shapes and textures of the metal. Working with organic fibres like cotton, linen or silk, they printed onto fabrics, painted onto materials and papers with liquid rust and some used the metal objects themselves in their pieces. The process was very experimental, and there were lots of amazing different and unique outcomes.
