Day 23 - Gansey Knitting: 🐑🎄

A gansey is a Fisherman’s sweater. The gansey is knitted seamlessly by hand with gussets and other features, not made by a machine or sewn together in parts. Ganseys are traditionally knitted on steel double pointed needles, using tightly spun worsted wool. This material was perfect to use for gansey knitting for its ability to knit into a dense fabric, repel water, and keep the body at a regular temperature in cold and wet conditions.

The gansey would be traditionally knitted by the fishermen’s wives; each having a subtly different pattern that would pass down from mother to daughter through the generation. Ganseys are typically patterned with motifs using alternating purl and knit stitches to create historic and contemporary shapes and cables that could be linked to various regions where there was a fishing trade. Some of the former Scots girls reminisce on the rivalry and one-up-manship of using patterns that no-one else in the village was using.

A quote at the museum reads: ‘Whan dey wir nae herring in, dan wi wid sit on da swills an knit’. Scots girls, who followed the herring trail along the East Coast, could often be seen around the town engaged in animated conversation with each other, knitting quickly as they talked. Scots girls would knit with a ‘knitting sheath’ or ‘belt’ to assist the weight of the garment.

You can find out more at the Time and Tide Museum and on the East Anglia Gansey Group page!

Day 22 - Inuit Snow Shoes ❄️

This image is of a First Nation snowshoe made from wood and string/rawhide, with leather bindings which was donated to the Norfolk Museums Service in 1964.

Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person wearing them over a large area so that their foot doesn't sink completely into the snow—this is called ‘flotation’. Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings.

This latticework is useful in preventing snow from accumulating on the shoes with each step. Most First Nations groups developed their own distinctive type of snowshoe. The further south you go in North America, the longer and narrower snowshoes become. The Cree have a traditional hunting snowshoe that is more than 1.5 meters long (nearly 6 ft).

Snowshoes of the Iroquois tribe are narrow but short, reflecting the need for manoeuvrability in more forested areas. Before horses were introduced, even Plains Indians wore snowshoes on their winter buffalo hunts. There are two
styles of snowshoe that Inuit use; one is triangular and about 45cm (18 inches) long, and the other is almost circular.

However, Inuits do not use snowshoes often, as in winter they mostly travel on foot on the sea ice or tundra, where the snow doesn’t collect deeply enough to make snowshoes necessary. Several animals, including Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and the aptly named Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus), have evolved extremely large feet that work in a very similar way to snowshoes, enabling them to move quickly and efficiently through deep snow.

Day 21 - The Troll Doll:

The troll doll originated from the small town of Gjøl in Denmark in the 1950s. These brightly-haired 'Good Luck Trolls' were originally made of wood, with orange, white and black Icelandic sheep wool hair glued to the top to create a wild look. Trolls are supposed to be lucky in Scandanavia, hence the name.

These dolls became a toy craze in the early 1960s and in the 1990s and recently had a film adaptation in 2013.

We’ve reached the end of term and what a busy one it’s been!

Since September we’ve welcomed 2,733 pupils from 54 different schools and we have set up and packed away our sessions a total of 86 times!

The feedback has also been great: ‘The visit answered questions which our scheme didn’t. The children learnt far more from the practical, engaging day than from several classroom based lessons.’

A huge thank you to all our schools who have visited this term and we’d like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a wonderful new year!
