Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum The Schoolroom Museum in Great Ayton is housed in a building once used as a charity school, it was here Captain James Cook received his early education.

Please check our weekly posts to verify opening times and dates, which are subject to change. The Trust manages the upkeep and development of the museum, on behalf of the village and local community. The museum, the site of the original schoolroom, houses an exciting educational display and interaction of the early life and achievements of James Cook.

It’s officially “sweater weather”, and time for a bigger coat!

As indoor activities may be more appealing now it’s turning colder… don’t forget you can visit the museum over this weekend (Sat/Sun) or next week between Wed - Sun. We will be open 1-4pm.

Grab one of your last opportunities to visit this year, as we officially close up for the season after the end of the month.

It’s a beautiful sunny day today at the coast, but if you’re headed inland and to Great Ayton, don’t forget the museum is open 1-4pm this afternoon.

‼️ Next week the museum is only open Fri-Sun, 1-4pm and it’s worth the reminder that we are getting down to the last few weeks that we’ll be open for 2026…

🔔 We will be posting weekly reminders of our open days throughout October, up to and including Sunday November 1st 2026 (the last week in October half term holiday). Thereafter we will be closed for the 2026 season and will re-open in Spring 2026, so ensure you make the most of the time left!! 🔔

⚠️ Schedule Update! ⚠️

We will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons this week, 1-4pm.

Please note that we will remain open throughout October up to and including Sunday November 1st 2026 (the last week in the October half term holiday). Then we will be CLOSED until re-opening in Spring 2027.

Please refer to our pinned post at the top of the page for our usual weekly opening days and hours. Updates to these, where necessary, will follow weekly until we close for the 2026 visitor season.

As a reminder, we do sometimes open up the museum outside of our usual dates and times for special occasions and for larger parties like school visits, by prior arrangement. Please use our messenger contact link for any enquiries in this regard. 📧

The museum is open on Saturday 29 August and Bank Holiday Monday over this coming weekend.

Please note we are not open Friday 28 and Sunday 30 August.

This week the museum is open for our normal hours, between 1-4pm, Wednesday to Sunday inclusive. 🙌🏼🤩

If you’re not on a beach somewhere, or out sailing a boat, why not come to the village, grab a Suggitts ice cream and visit the museum to alleviate the school holiday boredom!?
