Lincolnshire Schools Poetry Competition 2026

The Willoughby Memorial Trust invites pupils from Lincolnshire schools to enter our annual Poetry Competition. This year’s theme is “Wonder”, the National Poetry Day theme for 2026.

Open to pupils aged 5–16 (Key Stages 1–4), with prizes in each age group. Winning poems will be displayed in the Willoughby Memorial Trust Library and prize-winners will be invited to read their poems at our prize-giving evening on 27 November.

Closing date: Monday 12 October 2026.

Introducing: Our Wonderful World of Art - Vale of Belvoir Art Society 🌍

Our wonderful new exhibition is on display in the Willoughby Memorial Gallery until the 28th October. It features a variety of fantastic works from the Vale of Belvoir Art Society, including work from their members of all ages, featuring a variety of mediums, materials and techniques. ❗ It’s the last week to see our current exhibitions : A Love of Colour by Valerie Rath and Finding Joy in our Landscape by Rachel Larder! The last day of these fantastic exhibitions is the 30th September!

Bringing the outside in to the Willoughby Memorial Gallery, both Rachel Larder and Valerie Rath are inspired by the beauty of the world around them, featuring abstract landscapes, countryside features, flowers and nature. Valerie Rath's collection mostly features beautiful, vibrant oil paintings, whilst Rachel Larder features abstract, imaginary works inspired by the countryside around her. Don't miss out on seeing these wonderful works!

🎟️How to visit the Willoughby Memorial Gallery?

The Willoughby Memorial Gallery is free to visit, and no advance booking is required! As a registered charity, the Trust plays an active role in the cultural life of the area, offering free access to exhibitions and supporting creative engagement across the community.

Therefore, we only ask for an optional donation on arrival, to help us preserve the gallery, and share artwork to future generations.

⏱️ Opening times during Exhibition Season (March - November):

Tuesday - Sunday | 12 noon – 5 pm

🖼️ Did you know that the Willoughby Memorial Gallery has its own collection? The late Lord Willoughby de Eresby was a great collector of art and one of the first shows in the Willoughby Memorial Gallery was an exhibition of his art collection. Four of the works from this collection are on display in the Library.

One of which is this portrait of Timothy Willoughby (1961) by Harold Stevenson.

Stevenson is an American painter, who moved to Paris in 1952, exhibiting in European galleries during the 1950s and 1960s. A friend, mentor and associate of Any Warhol, he is known for his paintings of male nudes. His large work, The New Adam 1963, (acquired by the Gugenheim Museum in New York in 2005), on 8 canvases, measures 8 feet x 39 feet and was dedicated to Lord Timothy Willoughby.

This lively ink drawing is one of several that Stevenson made of his friend Lord Willoughby.
