The next exhibition to be displayed in our gallery is 'In Sync: Words and Wonders' - Tuesday 8th September - Sunday 4th October.
This exhibition will showcase a wonderful collection of artworks alongside poems relating to the artworks, and vice versa. Displaying both contemporary and historic poetry in relation to the selected 2D and 3D artworks from our collection, we hope to celebrate the ways in which art has inspired poets, and poetry has inspired artists for centuries.
With artworks and poetry brought together by the likes of Andrew Morrison and Julia Manning, poetry by well known names such as Emily Bronte and Wordsworth, as well as an array of artworks from our collection. We'll also be inviting visitors to pause and write their own poetic responses to the items on display, so we hope this exhibition will delight and inspire you.
The image shown here is a piece within our collection, 'The Common S**g' by Julia Manning. The image used here is a cropped version of the original that will be on display in the show, so if you visit the exhibition you will find that there is a poem written along the bottom of the etching...come along to find out what it says!
This exhibition is included in our general admission.

Our 'Collection Spotlight' this week is on this wonderful Japanese cloisonné Kōro, from the Meiji period, 1868-1912.
A Kōro is a traditional Japanese incense burner used to burn incense in temples, shrines and in the home, however, with this particular piece, we are not sure how this one worked as there are no holes in the lid. This spherical form with a knob-handled cover/lid, has been worked in copper wire within a red ground, contrasted by a flock of white cranes huddled in clouds. The stylised lappet border around the rim and edge of the cover beautifully brings the piece together.
After the young Meiji Emperor assumed the throne in 1868, Japan's new leaders realised that the historic skills of the metalworker, lacquerer, enameller and ceramic artist could play a vital part in the struggle to compete in international markets.
Before long, visitors to international exhibitions in Europe and America were confronted with astonishing displays of Japanese artistic creativity and technical virtuosity. The Kōro became an art form in its own right, blending the best of traditional design and craftsmanship. They quickly gained attention, and were highly sought after by many collectors in the West.
This wonderful Kōro, along with a selection of other cloisonné pieces from our collection, are currently on display in the gallery. All included in our general admission.

It's already the final week to view the British Wildlife Photography Awards on display in our main galleries.
With over 75 photographs on display, this is an exhibition not to be missed, so visit us before 5pm on Sunday 6th September to see this revered showcase of nature photography in Britain.

As well as the One World Imagined artists in the 'Wild Perspectives' exhibition, we also have Andrew Forkner as our resident artist in the garden studio this week.

Pop along for the final week of our British Wildlife Photography Awards, displayed in our main galleries (included in admission), visit the 'Wild Perspectives' exhibition in our Atrium space in the education centre and meet some of the artists from the collective, with the chance to see them working on their current pieces.

With the end of the summer holiday's upon us, we're thinking of the summer fun that's been had, adventures and sunny trips to the seaside, beachcombing and finding nature's treasures.
So with that in mind, our 'collection spotlight' this week is a beautiful decoupage vase depicting various sea shells, by British contemporary artist, Elizabeth Gray.
The design on this vase has been created by painting the different elements on many different pieces of paper and then applying them on the inside of the vase.
Elizabeth Gray is highly regarded for her birds flying in a landscape, and has been widely exhibited in North America. Moving on from painting, her artistic talents also turned to many other mediums including printmaking, decoupage, ceramics, tapestry and decorated glass.
Visit us to view this piece up close, along with other decoupage works by the same artist, currently on display in our main gallery. Included in general admission.

This week's artist in residence will be Tracey-Anne Sitch, a watercolour artist who paints natural history, primarily British wildlife.
In the wonderful 'Brambles' artwork (detail) shown here, you can see how Tracey enjoys working in differing styles that vary from simple portraits of the subject on a plain background, using watercolours to create portraits with elaborately patterned ‘frame-breaking’ paintings, inspired by the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau artists of the past.
Tracey will be joining us in our garden studio, Tuesday 25th - Sunday 30th August, so pop along to meet the artist and view the selection of works she'll have on display and for sale.

Visit us this weekend to meet the wonderful and browse the beautiful collection of silver jewellery she has on display and for sale, in our café studio. Her work is deeply inspired by nature's treasures, walks along the coast and time spent in nature, each unique piece created with a delicate and considered touch.
Sarah will be with us until 5pm Sunday 23rd, so pop in to meet the artist, stop for lunch, and enjoy the sunshine and cooler temperatures in our sculpture garden.
You'll also find our second resident artist, Chris Sinden, in our garden studio with a display of his linocut prints. There's plenty to do this weekend, and lots to inspire ✨
