'Us, Interrupted began with a fairly simple idea: phones are getting in the way. The more I painted, though, the less simple it became.

Phones distract us, isolate us and pull our attention away from the people and places directly in front of us. But they also connect us, entertain us, reassure us, make us laugh and allow us to share moments with people who may be nowhere near us. So the work became less about blaming the phone and more about looking at us.

These paintings explore the strange, funny and sometimes tender ways we now live alongside technology. Some figures are absorbed in screens. Some are connecting through them. Some are missing what is around them. Others are sharing something joyful. At the heart of the exhibition is something much older than the technology itself: our need to connect.’

Steven J. Alles is an American born physician artist who earned his master’s degree in fine art in 1995 from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) while working for the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Rochester in upstate New York.

His interest in the biological sciences and helping people in need led him to complete a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2001 from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania working as a junior doctor in Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital. He completed a Preventive Medicine Residency in 2004 at the University of Maryland that included a master’s degree of science specialising in epidemiology. After residency, Dr. Alles accepted a position at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health as a Medical Epidemiologist in the Division of Disease Control investigating outbreaks of infectious diseases. He was promoted to the Director of the Division in 2017 and worked through the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2024, Dr. Alles resigned from public health service to become a full-time painter and frame maker. He now rents a local studio and is actively creating work in his expressive style with an evolving message of vulnerability, determination and equality.

'From Darkness to Madness' is a body of work from an American physician during civil deterioration of life in the United States.

The work is mainly autobiographical as the artist uses himself as subject across the spectrum of gender to describe pushback to policies that undermine public health and equality.
Dark Glaswegian cityscapes, iconic American architecture and fierce drag queens come together in a mad way to describe the political pendulum of the 21st century.

Lucy Gordon is a graduate of the Fine Art Painting department from Glasgow School of Art. Working from her home studio, Lucy's art uses a combination of found imagery and fabricated characters to create portraits that swerve from the surreal to the sublime. Working primarily in oil paints, her subjects invite and inspire us to imagine their lives, familiar yet fictional, inscrutable and obscure; allowing us to create our own narratives about the work.

Yang Liu (b. 1988, China) is a conceptual artist based in the United Kingdom. Working across time-based and spatial media, her practice investigates how perception of reality is constructed and destabilised through experiential and temporal conditions.

Her work often stages situations in which perceptual certainty is disrupted, shifting the viewer’s relation to time, space, and lived experience. She received an MA from the Glasgow School of Art in 2024.

Time is often imagined as stable, measurable, and continuous. The works in ‘Before It Gives Way’ approach it differently: as a condition sustained through repetition, pressure, adjustment, and eventual release. What appears to persist does so through ongoing effort.

Across the exhibition, time is enacted through mechanical systems that maintain themselves while simultaneously approaching their own limits. A clock hand rises under motorised control until gravity interrupts. A pendulum continues its swing through repeated impact. A countdown accelerates toward an expected event that never arrives. These works do not depict failure as interruption or endpoint.

Control and loss, expectation and suspension, order and deviation appear as consecutive conditions within the same operational loop. What is sustained eventually gives way. What gives way becomes the condition for continuation.
