As 2020 draws to a close we thought we'd share some pictures taken by Frank Murphy Photography of our Centre Circle Day spectator event back in October. The one day this year where we've had the buses and crews out and about!

Many thanks for allowing us to share, Frank!

Every so often a great old picture of Glasgow appears on social media. This is one such picture. A nice festive scene on Renfield Street in Glasgow in the 1960's. But looking closer at the bus reveals its none other than Glasgow Corporation AEC Regent A350, one of the vehicles preserved today at Bridgeton Bus Garage!

A bit of Christmas sparkle, looking up Renfield Street, Glasgow 1963.

Happy Boxing Day from GVVT!

How's this for a gem? Some brief cine film rushes of busy Glasgow streets in the 1960's. So much to see. Lots of buses! Corporation LAs, Big Ls and a Wee L. Also some Central SMT buses. And a rather tidy AEC Reliance coach too.

In line with the Scottish Government's announcement yesterday on further COVID-19 control measures for Glasgow, the trustees have taken the decision to close Bridgeton Bus Garage to everyone from 5pm this coming Friday (20th November). These measures are expected to remain in place for a minimum of three weeks. The precise date when the Scottish Government will ease these restrictions is to be confirmed. Therefore, we will advise of the garage re-opening date in due course.

Stay safe!

A bus that doesn't get photographed much at GVVT, as she's looking a little sorry for herself, is former Walter Alexander &Sons AC102, originally JWG682 but currently YTS723A. AEC Reliance MU3RV with Alexander 41 sear d/p bodywork, a classic Scottish bus of the 1950s. Also making a rare daylight appearance as part of a shuffle around, is Alexander's Midland Leyland Leopard NMS576M. It is typical of large numbers of 53 seat service bus Leopards taken by SBG fleets, this one a survivor of the brutal SBG spec of manual gearbox (half crash, half synchro), and no power steering, which was taken long after most fleets south of the border moved to sèmi-auto and power steering. Well, what a great day for running vintage buses around Glasgow city centre! Big thanks to all of the people who made this possible (including whoever was able to change the weather from what had been forecast all week). You might have seen up to 16 buses from Bridgeton Bus Garage today, along with two very welcome visitors from Gifford and Lathalmond.
Thanks too to all of you who have been commenting on and sharing pictures across our social media feeds. Remember to tag, like and share whenever you can. Also don’t forget that you can donate to our online appeal directly through Facebook or by visiting our website www.gvvt.org

On Saturday 24th October, GVVT will be holding our first ever Centre Circle Running Day. You'll be able to see a fantastic selection of vintage buses from Bridgeton Bus Garage as they tour around the city centre between 11am and 4pm. Unfortunately, we are unable to carry passengers but we hope you'll enjoy the sights and take plenty of pictures (which we hope you'll share on our social media streams). Why Centre Circle? Back in July 1976, GGPTE (Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive) came up with the idea of running a frequent and cheap circular service around the city centre and numbered it 77/88. You can see the original route in this post. Unfortunately, the services weren't particularly well-used and the 77 was withdrawn in February 1979, with the 88 finally succumbing in May 1979. Due to pedestrianisation and the extensive one-way system in today's Glasgow city centre, we are unable to follow the original route. However, the Centre Circle Day route is a pretty good interpretation! Thanks to Bob Downham for the photograph of LA853 in Parliamentary Road and to Alan Millar for the picture of LA764 in North Hanover Street. All photographs are strictly copyright and must not be used without the permission of the photographers.

Good evening from Bridgeton Bus Garage,

Planning is in full swing for our Centre Circle Day coming up on Saturday 24th October between 11am and 4pm. Come and see a range of the fleet of vehicles from the garage out on the city centre streets.

We're delighted to be able to show you a map of the route. Pick you vantage point and watch the old buses pass by or get some great photographs.

Best wishes,

Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust

We're delighted to confirm that we will be holding an event on 24th October 2020 between 11am and 4pm where we will be getting many buses out on the road to run on a circular route around Glasgow city centre. This will be a spectator event where you can come and see the buses in motion and out on the street. A great opportunity for photographers! Unfortunately, we are not able to allow passengers on the vehicles due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. But nonetheless, it will be a great chance to add some colour to the streets and to see the vehicles running.

More details on the route will be published very soon along with information on vehicles taking part. Also check our website and social media for further updates.

Best wishes,

Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust

PS - why Centre Circle? GGPTE used to run the Centre Circle service in the 1970's. It ran clockwise and anti-clockwise and was numbered 77 and 88. While it is not possible to run the Centre Circle today due to different priorities on the city centre streets, the event will run on a circular route round the city centre in the spirit of the original.
