The Gospel of Matthew speaks of wise men, or ‘Magi’, travelling from the East, following a star in search of the newborn Christ, king of the Jews.

In Western Europe by tradition these travellers are commonly identified as, Melchoir, Caspar, and Balthazar. From around the 400s CE, the youngest of the Magi, often identified as Balthazar, came to be associated with an African origin.

However, it would not be until a millennia later that European artists began to depict Balthazar as a young black African king.

Join curator Edward Johnson in his exploration of how and why Medieval Europe’s evolving world view transformed the iconography of the three magi, and how images of the black African king Balthazar proliferated throughout Medieval Europe.

Earlier this week, our Curator of Chinese Art Yupin Chung hosted a festive talk that explored the different hues of the colour red in ceramic art and flower arrangement. ❤️🌹🌶️🍎🍒🧧🎈

The Burrell Collection has a large number of fine monochromes including this superb example of a copper-red glazed vase purchased by Sir William Burrell on 4 December 1948. This vase, with a tall cylindrical neck, is outstanding for its rich red glaze, sang-de-boeuf ‘oxblood’. Its glaze incandesces like the fiery red sky after the rain.

Red corresponds with fire and symbolizes good fortune and joy. It is used particularly during the Lunar New Year and also at weddings and family gatherings.

Fascinatingly, red is a colour we see a huge amount of over the Christmas period. Red also has a wider symbolism relating to love and romance – all of which are often prominent at this special time of year! 🎅🎁

Vase with ‘oxblood’ (langyao) copper-red glaze ID 38.722
