We’ve had a huge amount of visitors to the gallery who have been enjoying the Cleo Mussi: Botanicals exhibition. Many of the visitors have commented on how much they have enjoyed them and how inspiring and uplifting they have found the works. We will be sorry to say goodbye to these highly imaginative and creative mosaics and the intriguing characters who have kept us company whilst gracing our walls.

The final day of the exhibition is on Tuesday 7th November when many of the works will be collected to go to their new homes. If you haven’t already seen the exhibition you can pop in tomorrow 11am - 4pm. Please note that the gallery is closed Sunday and Monday. The exhibition will remain on our website after Tuesday 7th November and can be viewed via the link below:

Compass Gallery is delighted to invite you and your guests to the opening of a new exhibition by Cleo Mussi on Saturday 7th October from 12pm-4pm.

Cleo is a maverick ceramic artist creating unique mosaics, marshalling historical shards of china into contemporary stories that reflect the World around us. Cleo’s work takes you on a journey of discovery from her life size gestural figures to small intimate works, all drawn from historical repurposed ceramic tableware. She explores narratives mapped from her personal journeys through history, science, art and nature, exploring the surface and the underbelly of key themes in anthropology and humanity. The work holds cross cultural references in fashionable design , travel and commerce and represents the story of industrial ceramic history. Chinese ceramic meets Wedgewood, Poole sits next to Japanese porcelain and Staffordshire unites with Homebase to form a unique and motley collection of work.

We'd like to welcome you into the gallery to meet Cleo herself but if this is not possible, please click on the link below to see the exhibition. Should you wish to see any artworks in more detail from your home, we offer video consultations. The exhibition will run until 7th November and thereafter will remain on view on our website.

We are delighted to announce a new solo exhibition ‘A Sense of Place’ by artist Gregor Smith RSW, it opens on Thursday 31st August 2023 from 5 - 7pm. The exhibition runs until 23rd September and can be viewed on our website.

https://compassgallery.co.uk/2015/gregor-smith-rsw-a-sense-of-place/

The artist writes:

“Winter weather is my preference regardless of location. The light may be clearer so the response may display more observed accuracy, whilst up above our skies reflect precipitation and turbulence. Our physical world appears distressed, and then vanished only to reappear changed.”

19/08/2023

Looking ahead to autumn shows and Glasgow's Compass Gallery will be hosting the sixth solo show of RSW member Gregor Smith. The show will feature works made from European travels and his home country of Scotland.

We’re exhibiting the work of Daisy Pickford, a new graduate from Gray’s School of Art. Her work is beautifully drawn and painted on wooden panels. Rich, colourful patterns with written words and exotic creatures are drawn from her conscious and unconscious ways of thinking. These works are available to view on our walls in the gallery or on our website https://compassgallery.co.uk/2015/summer-show-2023/

We are so sorry to hear today that one of our favourite artists Dennis Buchan RSA has died. His association with both Compass Gallery and the New Charing Cross Gallery goes back over 60 years and he will be missed greatly. Dennis Buchan was born in Arbroath Scotland and studied at and later became a full time lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. He completed his postgraduate studies at Hospitalfield Arbroath. Winner of several major awards his work is held in both national and international public and private collections. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1991 and served on the Scottish Arts Council awards panel. It was such a pleasure to have presented his most recent solo exhibition in September 2022 welcoming him and his family and friends into the gallery. https://compassgallery.co.uk/2015/dennis-buchan-rsa-retrospective-exhibition-coastal-connections/

Our Story

Compass Gallery, Glasgow’s longest established Contemporary Art Gallery, opened its doors in 1969 at 178 West Regent Street with the aim of nurturing and supporting emerging artists. Offering rare opportunities to exhibit, over the years Compass has displayed the work of almost every renowned Scottish artist, often giving them their first solo shows. It built its longstanding reputation for supporting the careers of the newly graduated artistic talent from the four Scottish art schools, particularly through the annual New Generation Show. 51 years later, Compass Gallery continues to present a rolling programme of exhibitions of artworks across all mediums for sale, created by both newly emerging and long established artists from Scotland and beyond. Compass Gallery is a registered not for profit charity, sustained wholly on commission from sales and generous donations from our supporters.
