Throwback to the 80’s .
Just in. This wonderful
John Hoyland RA
etching and aquatint “
“Tembi .. Rankin”
21x27 inches signed

These prints manifest Hoyland's desire to use the etching process as a colouristic rather than linear medium. Working directly into a soft or hard ground with a brush loaded with white spirit, he has produced contrasting scumbled and opaque areas in a manner closely resembling his gouache drawings of the same period. The fresh colour and the lively surface of a work such as these result from the manipulation of aquatint and the bleeding of inks. Hoyland has encouraged the formation of drip marks and other accidental markings conferring upon the printmaking medium characteristics normally associated with his painting. Because these only become apparent in proofing, the final decisions concerning the conception as well as the executing of the image are often made at a later stage

We’ve had a huge amount of visitors to the gallery who have been enjoying the Cleo Mussi: Botanicals exhibition. Many of the visitors have commented on how much they have enjoyed them and how inspiring and uplifting they have found the works. We will be sorry to say goodbye to these highly imaginative and creative mosaics and the intriguing characters who have kept us company whilst gracing our walls.

The final day of the exhibition is on Tuesday 7th November when many of the works will be collected to go to their new homes. If you haven’t already seen the exhibition you can pop in tomorrow 11am - 4pm. Please note that the gallery is closed Sunday and Monday. The exhibition will remain on our website after Tuesday 7th November and can be viewed via the link below:

Our Story

Compass Gallery, Glasgow’s longest established Contemporary Art Gallery, opened its doors in 1969 at 178 West Regent Street with the aim of nurturing and supporting emerging artists. Offering rare opportunities to exhibit, over the years Compass has displayed the work of almost every renowned Scottish artist, often giving them their first solo shows. It built its longstanding reputation for supporting the careers of the newly graduated artistic talent from the four Scottish art schools, particularly through the annual New Generation Show. 51 years later, Compass Gallery continues to present a rolling programme of exhibitions of artworks across all mediums for sale, created by both newly emerging and long established artists from Scotland and beyond. Compass Gallery is a registered not for profit charity, sustained wholly on commission from sales and generous donations from our supporters.
