A FOCUS ON SCULPTURE
AN ONLINE SELECTION OF SMALL SCALE WORKS
There have been relatively few opportunities to see specialised sculpture exhibitions, especially of small-scale works. Our own interest in presenting such a show goes back to at least the early 1970’s when well presented an exhibition of maquettes in Compass which has a long history of including sculpture in its exhibition programme showing works by New Generation artists and bringing major well known names such as Sir Anthony Caro, Dame Elizabeth Frink, Anne Christopher, Anna Maria Pacheco, Belinda Rush Jansen, James Castle and many others who had not yet exhibited in Scotland. This online selection highlights a range of ideas and styles in bronze, wood, stone and other materials on an easily accommodated domestic scale please enjoy browsing the exhibition on our website . Cafe Gandolfi

Good afternoon all! Hope you're well and coping during this - the longest seeming of all the lockdowns! It should go without saying that we at Cafe Gandolfi desperately miss our day-to-day work lives and seeing you all in the heart of the Merchant City ❤

Anyone who has ever set foot in Cafe Gandolfi will know just how special and beautiful our hand-crafted furniture is. One of the first commissions by renowned craftsman Tim Stead MBE, our tables and chairs have stood the test of time for over 40 years now and are undoubtedly a huge part of what makes Cafe Gandolfi unique.

Tim was an immensely talented craftsman, and his home 'The Steading' was his life's work. A registered charity is racing to save this A-listed building for the nation, so people can enjoy his work in perpetuity.

We realise this is a very tough time for everyone just now, but if you can please take the time to check out this crowdfunding project (there is also a wonderful video exemplifying Tim's exquisite artistry at The Steading) and donate if you can.

This beautiful stained glass piece by Cecilia Murray is new to Compass Gallery and seems to bring sunshine through our window.

She explained her inspiration, saying

“During lockdown it felt the way people must have felt during the war. At the same time Vera Lynn died and the song was on the radio all the time. Watching the way the ideas in the song cheered people up, I thought it was an image of hope: that we might get back to normal.”

Ceramic artist Anne Morrison fell in love with clay when she was 17 and it has defined her life.

This glorious iridescent pot brings together that love with her passion for walking, exploring beaches for found objects that add texture and character to each piece.

See Anne’s ceramics alongside those of Linda Styles and the mesmerising landscapes created by Gregor Smith in “Four Points: A Geographic Journey”. At Compass Gallery now.

29/09/2020

Our second ceramic artist in the exhibition opening from this Saturday is Anne Morrison, whose Raku fired pots and sculptural forms combine elegance, iridescence and a variety of intriguing found objects. An award winning graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Anne says:

“My work is based around a theme of decay and renewal and the ongoing cycle of life. Throughout our lives we go through periods of death and rebirth: after many times of darkness come hope and renewal which affect our view of the world, our place within it, and the spiritual aspects beyond it. From old or discarded objects that I collect, I create something new. Large forms are cut and reassembled to reflect the need to rebuild our lives after painful events. Additions of leather, wire or bolts are used to achieve this and also reflect the finds from the shore. Sometimes leaves or plants are pressed into the clay to remind us of the natural world in which we live."

Anne’s pieces can be viewed by booking a [email protected] 12pm onwards on Sat 3rd October. Call or email [email protected].

Alongside the work of Gregor Smith, opening Saturday, we will be exhibiting new ceramics by two accomplished art potters, Linda Styles and Anne Morrison.

Cornwall based Linda Styles works with exhilarating flourishes of colour and texture. Of this new collection she says:

“The majority of this body of work was made and decorated between March and July 2020, and is a fair reflection of how I was feeling.
The three smaller, more intricate of form vessels were made before this time, with the glory of birds in mind, before I became aware of what a positively uplifting role they would play in the following months of isolation, during which, all my senses seemed to heighten.”

Join us from 12pm onward on 3 Oct by bookin a timeslot via phone, DM or [email protected] gallery.co.uk

Cyril Ge**er Fine Art

Tom Shanks RSW RGI PAI was a wonderful draughtsman and often drew the different ships passing up the Clyde, and the ferries that crisscrossed to the Outer Isles. This powerful pen and ink drawing shows the magnitude and the scale of the Queen Elizabeth as it was anchored in the Clyde at Greenock in 1944 during the war. Constructed in Clydebank for the Cunard Line, she was the largest passenger liner ever built at that time. She first entered service as a troopship during the Second World War, and it was not until 1946 that she was used as her intended purpose as an ocean liner, running a weekly service between Southampton and New York via Cherbourg until 1969. #gerberfineart #scottishmaritimemusem #queenelizabeth #riverclydeglasgow #kelvingrovemusrum #ww2 #tomshanks #RSW #drawings

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of James “Jimmy” Morrison RSA RSW, a truly accomplished landscape and figurative painter who exhibited in both solo and mixed shows in Compass Gallery and Ge**er Fine Art. Pictured here: “Sheep Fold”, Oil on canvas.

Morrison (1932-2020) graduated from Glasgow School of Art and was one of the founders of the Glasgow Group of artists. He taught at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee before becoming a full time painter in 1987.

Our Story

Compass Gallery, Glasgow’s longest established Contemporary Art Gallery, opened its doors in 1969 at 178 West Regent Street with the aim of nurturing and supporting emerging artists. Offering rare opportunities to exhibit, over the years Compass has displayed the work of almost every renowned Scottish artist, often giving them their first solo shows. It built its longstanding reputation for supporting the careers of the newly graduated artistic talent from the four Scottish art schools, particularly through the annual New Generation Show. 51 years later, Compass Gallery continues to present a rolling programme of exhibitions of artworks across all mediums for sale, created by both newly emerging and long established artists from Scotland and beyond. Compass Gallery is a registered not for profit charity, sustained wholly on commission from sales and generous donations from our supporters.
