Alison Cowan is always a gallery favourite and her paintings, full of texture and colour, always bring people into the gallery when we show them in the window. These are heavily textured and bright and bold paintings that make a real impact on any wall. Verging on abstract a times, Alison often uses trees or the suggestion of trees and wooded areas to pull the composition together and the effect is usually to pull you further and further into the painting. A hugely popular artist that for many years lived just round the corner from our gallery, we have another lovely collection of pieces in our Summer Show as well as a selection of postcard size pieces.

As some of the Annan team are lucky enough to be enjoying some holiday time in Italy, we thought a few Venice inspired paintings from and a sprinkling of Italy photos from a little further south would keep everyone in the Summer holiday mood.

We can see why Italy continues to be an inspiration for our artists and artists worldwide!

Paintings by Paul are:

‘Undern (Gondolier)’
Oil on Linen
Canvas 101 x 81cm
Framed 122 x 102cm

And

‘Rest’
Oil on Linen
Canvas 61 x 71cm
Framed 77 x 87cm

It’s always a pleasure to have a selection of Linda Park’s paintings in the gallery and this Summer we have another strong selection of pieces in Linda’s distinctive style.

Working with a combination of brushes and palette knives, Linda creates richly textured oil paintings full of expressive colour, with Linda often revisiting the places that have inspired her at different times of the day to capture the variations of light and textural qualities of a landscape.

This brings a new dimension of scale and depth to her paintings and helps capture the power of Scotland’s landscapes.

As part of our Summer Show, we have a real showstopper large abstract painting from Alison McWhirter, ‘Sea of Sunset.’ Often drawing inspiration from the non-visual, Alison created this work in response to Emily Dickinson’s poem of the same name (shown below), translating the imagery and atmosphere of the poem into a captivating visual language.
We were also thrilled to see a few of Alison’s pieces, one from our last Solo Show with Alison, feature in Architectural Digest’s brilliant tour of actors Jason Ralph and Rachel Brosnahan’s Manhattan apartment.

We often have clients telling us it would be nice to see where some of our gallery pieces end up so we loved seeing this insight into a wonderful and varied art collection, why it is so special to the owners and just how original art can transform any room.

Sea of Sunset
This is the land the sunset washes,
These are the banks of the Yellow Sea;
Where it rose, or whither it rushes,
These are the western mystery!
Night after night her purple traffic
Strews the landing with opal bales;
Merchantmen poise upon horizons,
Dip, and vanish with fairy sails

We’re well underway with preparations for one of our biggest exhibitions of the year - the remarkable Gordon Wilson’s only Solo Exhibition of 2026, ‘My Mind’s Eye’ opening 5th September.

We’ll be showcasing 35 new paintings, (with perhaps a few more), from one of Scotland’s most celebrated contemporary artists which will be a glimpse into Gordon’s unique way of seeing and experiencing the world.

Full of atmosphere, character and emotion, brought to life through his landscapes and rich cast of characters (and of course, his iconic biddies and belties will be making an appearance!).

Our previous solo exhibitions with Gordon have been a tremendous success, reflecting the enduring appeal of his work and his standing as one of Scotland’s foremost contemporary painters so if you’d like to be among the first to see the new paintings when the images are released, DM us or email [email protected] to join the list.

Here’s a short clip about the man behind the work to enjoy..

We always have a fantastic selection of paintings by James Somerville Lindsay in the gallery and our Summer Show is no exception.

Having spent many years living and painting in France, James always brings a Mediterranean warmth to his work - even when his subjects are Scottish. Capturing Scotland at its very best and reminding us that we do have nice days from time to time!
James also has a particular love of café and street scenes, where figures bring each canvas to life. There is a sense of quiet storytelling in every painting, inviting the viewer to imagine themselves there - sipping a drink, soaking up the atmosphere and just watching the world go by.

A true master of capturing place and mood, James’s work is always a pleasure to have in the gallery.

New to the Annan Gallery this Summer is artist Sarah Carrington who has painted a beautiful series of Iona inspired paintings (and some fantastic postcard-size paintings for our Postcard Show). Here are some images of the larger scale pieces which use various materials, including gold left, to layering surfaces to echo the weathered textures of the shoreline and the shifting qualities of light, sea and sky.

For those lucky enough to have visited Iona (on a nice day), these paintings will bring back happy memories of the white sand beaches, turquoise seas and expansive views and inspire those who haven’t been to Iona to visit.

Pop into the gallery to enjoy these paintings in person or contact us for more images or videos. Worldwide shipping available on any work from the gallery.
