Frittenden Historical Society

Frittenden Historical Society Frittenden Historical Society We are a small, friendly society from a small, friendly village in the Weald of Kent. We were first formed in 1975.

We aim to educate and entertain with talks and presentations about the history of our village and the county in which we live. Our season runs from October through to April and membership costs just £10, which gives free access to talks and events arranged for the season. Non-members are welcome and can attend a talk for £3. Meetings take place at Frittenden Memorial Hall and start at 8pm. Special

exhibitions or outings may have different locations and starting times, but members will be notified accordingly.

Thanks for everyone who came along to the opening meeting of the new season. There was a great buzz in the Memorial Hall and Phil Betts' recount of the fight against the brick factory was really detailed and relevant given the latest threat to the village.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Hope to spread the word about what Frittenden Historical Society does.

Our February talk is from Chris Levett who has a self-proclaimed passion for hops and fruit farming. His family have been farming hops and fruit in Kent and Sussex for well over 250 years. He grew up on a hop and fruit farm and spent most of his school holidays helping on his parent's farms. Kent used to be the 'Garden of England' and for Frittenden hops were a major crop - but sadly no longer, our last hop garden went in the early 1970s. Whilst there is much evidence around the village of the hop industry, there are fewer and fewer people remaining who have the memories of the great tales and traditions that grew up over time.

I hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday 25th February in the Memorial Hall at 8pm for what promises to be an interesting talk on the history of hops and hop-picking.
