The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses opened in June 1995 when the automation of Scottish Lighthouses was in its final phase. Housing a nationally recognised collection of Lighthouse artefacts, the Museum tells the story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, its lighthouses, engineers and keepers. The museum also offers tours of Kinnaird Head Lighthouse - a light which escaped automation and preserved in time as a manned light. Climb to the top of Kinnaird Head Lighthouse to enjoy the views from the top.

REMINDER
MUSEUM CLOSURE FOR WORKS

The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and Kinnaird Head Castle and Lighthouse will be closed to members of the public from Tuesday 20th October to Wednesday 11th November 2026.

Last day open is Monday 19th October, 10am-5pm.

This is a week earlier than earlier advertised.

During this period the lenses on our main gallery will be dismantled and then rebuilt in our new lens gallery.

Upon reopening Winter hours will resume meaning we are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

CHANGE OF DATE

The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and Kinnaird Head Castle and Lighthouse will be closed to members of the public from Tuesday 20th October to Wednesday 11th November 2026.

VISITORS

This year we have enjoyed meeting visitors from all around the world - at least 48 countries this season so far!

Whilst many of our visitors pass through leaving only memories, one of our visitors from Canada likes to leave a bit of herself behind everywhere she visits.

We have found her wee ducks in a number of discreet places around both the Museum and Lighthouse.

Brilliant!

Today we were visited by our last booked coach of the season, taking passengers from the cruise boats.

It has been great to have so many coach bookings this year and we look forward to welcoming them back next year!

BIRTHDAY SURPRISE

Our Museum Manager Lynda had a birthday surprise from Vince and the guys from V. G. Willox Ltd who are building our new gallery!

They remembered that it was Lynda’s birthday and surprised her with a cake and card. Not just any cake! A Princess cake with its very own tiara!

They remembered the date as it falls on the same week that the build comes to an end, sign over occurring on Friday - right on schedule.

It has been a pleasure having Vince and the guys working on this job and we are very thankful for all that that they have done for us through the building process.

Fraserburgh’s Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and Kinnaird Head Castle and Lighthouse will be open and FREE to visit during Doors Open Days 2026.

FREE ENTRY will take place between 10am-4pm on Saturday 19th September and 10am-12pm on Sunday 20th September.

Free tickets will be issue at the Museum desk and must be obtained BEFORE a lighthouse slot is assigned.
