After nearly a year of transformation, what was once a cold, damp, and empty space has been reimagined into a vibrant, sustainable venue. Built to the highest environmental standards, using locally sourc

ed timber and repurposed materials from the original structure, the Gallery is a place where art, nature, and community come alive. Owned by a druid, celebrant, conservation landscape architect, and local councillor, the Gallery embodies a deep commitment to community and connection. It warmly welcomes visitors and artists alike, celebrating the intersection of creativity and belonging. The Gallery showcases the beauty of nature through the artistic lens of three ancient cultures: Pictish, Norse, and Celtic. This curated space weaves together diverse perspectives, exploring humanity’s relationship with the land. Artists are inspired to work with natural materials like metal, wood, glass, ceramics, and paper, while also embracing innovative mediums such as fibreglass and digital media. This is more than an art space—it’s a celebration of heritage, sustainability, and the enduring bond between art and nature.

Where does a story live?

On the shores of the Loch of Stenness in Orkney stands Unstan Chambered Cairn, a place shaped by people more than 5,000 years ago.

A place for the dead.
A place of stone.
A place where memory was held in the landscape.

And perhaps this is where Unstan meets LØRE.

At LØRE, we look to ancient lands and the enduring threads of Pictish, Norse and Celtic traditions, exploring how our relationship with nature, myth, craft and place continues to shape the stories we tell today.

Unstan reminds us that this instinct is ancient.

The people who built this chamber left behind stone, pottery and human remains. We cannot hear their voices, but the landscape still speaks.

A bowl becomes a clue.
A stone becomes a doorway.
A cairn becomes a story.

From ancient hands to contemporary artists, the thread continues:

to make,
to remember,
to interpret,
to pass something on.

This is the spirit of LØRE, grounded in the past, looking towards an unknowable future, and finding the living connection between art, nature, heritage and human story.

🌿 THE PICTISH TREE OF LIFE 🌿

Rooted in the past.
Living in the present.
Reaching towards the future.

Across Scotland, the Picts left behind a remarkable visual language carved into stone, symbols of animals, people and mysterious forms whose meanings we can only partly understand today.

Among these ancient images, the idea of the Tree of Life offers a powerful way of thinking about heritage.

Its roots speak of those who came before us — of ancestors, place, memory and the knowledge carried through generations.

We could say Its trunk represents where we stand today: connected to everything that came before, but with the freedom to interpret, create and make our own mark.

And its branches reach into the future.

Because heritage is not simply something we preserve.

It is something we inherit, live, reinterpret and pass on.

This is what makes Scotland’s ancient symbols so compelling. They are not frozen in the past. They continue to inspire artists, makers and storytellers today, allowing something thousands of years old to find new meaning in the modern world.

At Løre, the Tree of Life has become a symbol of that connection.

Past. Place. People. Creativity. Future.

A reminder that we are all part of a much larger story.

And like a tree, our heritage only truly lives when it continues to grow. 🌿
