The remains of Fernhurst Furnace, also known as North Park Furnace, are some of the best preserved in the Sussex Weald. The iron industry flourished here in the 17th and 18th centuries using local ore, charcoal and water power. The untouched nature of the site and the rural surrounding belie the production of cast iron, tools and cannon which was effectively the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Even though there are many ‘hammer/furnace’ ponds throughout East and West Sussex, many people know little about the great historical and social importance of this bygone industry.

2019 Open Weekend

Our 2019 Open Weekend was a massive success, we welcomed over 1400 visitors who gave the most generations donations ever.

Each year our volunteers work hard to create a fun and educational weekend for all - our main purpose is to raise funds to help preserve the furnace site which is at constant risk or erosion and collapse. Thanks to several years of generous donations, we're on the verge of starting significant work to mitigate threats like winter flooding and to rebuild parts of the dam.

Thank you to everyone who came along to support Fernhurst’s heritage this year; here's a summary video of the weekend events.

We are always on the look out for more volounteers to help make our events even better. Get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Very pleased to have lots on offer to make your visit worthwhile this weekend.

Sir Marmaduke Rawdons Regiment of the Sealed Knot Society will be providing realistic (+ usually humorous) demos of a Civil War battle.

We have blacksmithing demos, bushcraft, coppice products, spinning, wood hewing, pottery firing, charcoal making as well as chance to buy some authentic gifts.

Gosport Living History Society and the team from Butser Ancient Farm will be on hand to teach you about tools and ways of old.

On Sunday, Kevin will be back with HawkingAbout's amazing falconry display.

You won't need a picnic. The lamb roast provides a great lunch on both days (veggie options on site too). A rural beer tent as well as Dylan's Ice Cream to keep you cool. Fernhurst Scout Group will provide all-day refreshments too.

This weekend’s weather makes it perfect for a trip out to the countryside; gates open at 10:30 on Saturday and Sunday.

We've never seen the Furnace like this before:

A programme of investigation works has taken place to provide the conservation team with vital information about the archaeology and structure of this threatened Scheduled Ancient Monument. North Park Furnace (Fernhurst Furnace) dates from the middle of the 16th century, it closed in 1776 and is one of the best surviving charcoal blast furnaces from the Wealden Iron Industry.

This work is in preparation for an urgent repair project to stabilise the dam to protect the archaeology and prevent the risk of flooding downstream.

Applications for Historic England funding to support this project have been very successful. The works are planned to take place from late 2019 and through 2020.

To find out more, come to Open Weekend at Fernhurst Furnace on September 14th & 15th.

A persistently foggy day in Fernhurst, the fog created a wonderful canvas for this Mini World drone photo today at the Furnace pond.

What a difference a few nights of rain makes, the pond now in full flood.

Thankfully a large percentage of the water is still being carried over - rather than through - the archeology. It's weather like this which presents the biggest threat to maintaining the remains of the Furnace site - we are attempting to preserve this fascinating place, you can help us by volunteering or donating (details on the website http://www.fernhurstfurnace.co.uk).

Open Weekend always offers a lot of fun and adventures, it also helps to spread the word about our historically significant archeology. We’re raising funds to preserve this site for future generations; it was wonderful so many people took the time to see it today.

Things got quite warm along the track today.
