TOMORROW NIGHT The Soft Light Sessions kick off with an evening of ambient intentional listening.

The Soft Light Sessions are a series of intentional listening events, all amplified through exquisite sound systems from our neighbours down the corridor, The Spinning Room Hifi. Expect low lighting, cabaret seating and drinks from our pop-up bar.

The sound system will vary from event to event - see event listings for an idea of the equipment that will be used. The systems will sound huge and immersive with the intention to give those that attend a memorable and evocative listening experience.

An ambient soundscape curated to nurture and envelope the audience.

Fri 23rd Oct | Jazz

A celebration of jazz, from the masters to today’s innovators in this influential & creative genre.

Fri 6th Nov | Industrial

An auditory experience that explores the industrial heritage of the great Northern mills through sound that is challenging, raw & experimental.

Thurs 19th Nov | Pardon Me Takeover

Discover the musical influences that have shaped the taste of Scott Proper - owner of Pardon Me, the Mills ’ new vinyl listening bar.

Sat 5th Dec | Soul / Funk / Disco

A joyous evening with Spinning Room Hifi’s resident DJ ‘Dean of Disco’, charting an important era in recorded music history.

From Farsley to Australia - and back again through wool. 🐏🌍

To celebrate Wool Month this October, we’re exploring Farsley’s place in the global story of this natural, renewable and remarkably versatile fibre.

Born in Farsley in 1764, the Reverend Samuel Marsden became closely connected with the development of Australia’s Merino wool industry. Fleeces from his sheep were made into fine worsted cloth in Rawdon, and the story goes that King George III was so impressed by the finished fabric that he gave Marsden five Spanish Merino sheep to take back to Australia. A monument depicting a merino ram was unveiled on Town Street in Farsley just up the road from Sunny Bank Mills and merino became an essential ingredient in the fine suit cloth produced here.

We have also programmed a series of workshops with our resident weaving tutor, Agnis Smallwood! Learn to weave your own 100% wool scarf on the site of our historic worsted cloth mill.

If you’re heading to the Gallery this weekend, make sure you bring your young folk along to make their own puppet in our new shadow puppet theatre from our brilliant studio holder Zoë!

Our Gallery craft activities are always free to drop in, and suitable for all ages (child-free adults, please get stuck in too).

Come along and get creative 🔦

The Gallery, shop and Tea Room are now back open as normal 10am - 4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays.

More about Zoë:

Zoe Eady - The Glass Gardenn is a multimedia artist and maker of things. The focus of her practice is on making beautiful and engaging physical objects (glass, wood, plastics, paper) through experimentation and problem solving. She draws influence from illustration, narrative, and observational daily drawing. At the heart of her practice runs the reoccurring themes of nature, and play.

Forest Shadows invites you to create your own shadow characters and stories in this illuminated woodland theatre.

How it was made:

Zoë combines both digital and analogue processes in her creative practice. Every part of this silhouette design started life as an individual hand cut paper shape. She later translated them into laser cut wood for strength and durability.

She explains that doing everything digitally makes her work look lifeless and flat, whilst doing everything the analogue way limits the scope of what can be achieved. ‘The trick is to find a balance and use it as a tool and not a medium.’

Last week, the Dyevolution team took part in Sustainable Fashion Week Bradford at Victoria Hall, Saltaire, sharing the stories of colour, textiles and sustainability with the next generation. We were delighted to run four hands-on workshops, introducing students to natural dyeing through creating their own bandanas using rhubarb, madder and logwood dyes.

What made the workshops even more special is that these natural dyes feature in the historic dye ledgers at the heart of the Dyevolution project. By working with these dyes today, students were able to make a direct connection with the textile workers, dyers and colour-makers who used them in the past.

Alongside our workshops, we spoke to students, teachers and industry professionals about Dyevolution, exploring how heritage skills, textile history and sustainable practices can help shape the future of fashion. The event welcomed around 100 students and staff, giving us a fantastic opportunity to connect with new schools, colleges and partners.

A huge thank you to our volunteers and project team whose enthusiasm and expertise helped make the day such a success. It's inspiring to see so many young people interested in sustainable textiles and the future of fashion.

The Gallery and The Spinning Room are excited to announce a new collaboration for this Autumn/Winter at the Mills - the Soft Light sessions.

Thank you to everyone who made it along to the launch last night, and to the wonderful Marnie Glum for stepping in last minute to perform.

A great visit from the Heritage Team to Horticap, the Harrogate charity supporting adults with learning disabilities through horticulture and garden craft.

We met to discuss growing dye plants for our upcoming Dyevolution project, and joined Kayleigh from Ocre Dyeing Studios to plan future workshops to share natural dyeing skills more widely with the students and local community.

If you haven’t been, we recommend a visit! They have a wonderful selection of plants for sale and a lovely café that also provides training opportunities for students alongside serving visitors.

It’s inspiring to connect with growers who put care, learning and community at the heart of everything they do. Plenty is already blooming and there's more to come so watch this space!
