Stop over-rendering your portraits.

In this Anders Zorn master study, I’m focusing on how he simplifies information and prioritises the large shapes rather than rendering every detail.

Dry brushing can create more than obvious texture.

In this portrait, I used thin, broken layers of paint to soften the forms and create a subtle, atmospheric finish.

The surface remains active without becoming harsh or overly textured.

You don’t need to describe every individual hair or detail to create convincing texture.

For this portrait, I used dry brushing to produce broken marks across the beard and skin. These marks suggest complexity, while the larger shapes keep the portrait feeling structured.

Softness doesn’t have to mean blending everything together.

For this portrait, I used soft scumbling to create gradual transitions while allowing some of the brushwork and underlying layers to remain visible.

If you're just starting to learn how to paint, I believe it's worth studying artists with a tighter, more refined style first.

Their decisions are often easier to understand, making it much simpler to analyse values, shape design, edge control, and brushwork.

Once you've built a solid foundation, experimenting with looser techniques becomes much more intentional.

This master study taught me that convincing paintings aren't created by rendering every tiny detail.

Accurate values, strong shape design, and controlled edges will always do more for your work than endless rendering.

I painted this master study using just one colour so I could focus entirely on the fundamentals.

Without colour to think about, all your attention goes into values, shape design, and edge control.

Those three things are what make a painting work, and if they're not working, no amount of colour will fix them.

One of the biggest mistakes artists make is giving every part of a painting the same amount of attention.
By varying your brushwork, edges, and level of detail, you create hierarchy and naturally guide the viewer's eye to the focal point.

This portrait wasn't blended.

It was painted using the tiling method, where every brushstroke is deliberately placed next to another.

The smooth transitions come from carefully controlling the values - not from blending.
