See yourself through an artist’s eyes!

On the final day of Mirrors: Reflecting on Identity, artist James Jimbo will be creating quick, expressive portraits LIVE in the Gallery!

🗓 Saturday 26 September
⏰ 10.30am–1pm & 2–3.30pm
🎟 FREE

No booking required, just sign up on the day to secure your slot. Spaces are limited and allocated first come, first served. Portraits take around 15 minutes per person. Couples and groups welcome. Or just come along to watch James at work and see this interactive installation take shape.

One last chance to see Mirrors - and perhaps leave with a portrait of your own. Come for the art, stay for the portrait!

This week's Art UK celebrates International Dog Day! This undated photograph of a chihuahua peeking out from a richly decorated garment is imbued with humour. Framed by chains, bells, and jewellery, the dog looks toward the camera with a playful expression.

Stern discovered his passion for photography at around six years old. At 19, he joined the BBC as a cameraman and went on to work on the influential Man Alive documentaries.

Alongside his film work, he produced still photographs in countries including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and North America, developing a distinctive documentary style.

This work is currently available to see as part of our Collections Display .

Inspired by our Cornish abstract art collection, this series of three workshops invites you to experiment, play and get creative with materials.

Try your hand at painting on fabric, heat transfer vinyl and needle felting, taking inspiration from artists including Larry Ham, Andrew Lanyon, Graham Barnes and Grace Gardner.

There’s no fixed outcome and no need to be an experienced artist, just come ready to explore and see where the materials take you.

✨ A relaxed, hands-on creative experience designed to support wellbeing and encourage personal expression.

Sessions are every Thursday during term-time, 17:00–19:30
Enjoy snacks and a hot dinner while you take part!

What we do:
⭐️Explore climate and wellbeing through art and creativity.
⭐️Learn different art techniques and styles each week.
⭐️Work on creative projects throughout the year, often leading to a small public event organised by the group.
⭐️Raise funds for a chosen charity through our activities.
⭐️Collaborate with professional artists, organisations and facilitators who lead workshops on various art skills.

Inspired by the gallery’s Cornish abstract art collection, this 3 session programme encourages playful experimentation with fabric, fibres and colour. Using techniques such as painting on fabric, heat transfer vinyl and needle felting, the sessions focus on material exploration and personal interpretation rather than fixed outcomes.

Suitable for all abilities, this programme supports wellbeing through hands on making in a relaxed and supportive environment, drawing inspiration from artists such as Larry Ham, Andrew Lanyon, Graham Barnes and Grace Gardner.

Today’s Art UK theme is Forms of portraiture. From our current exhibition ‘Mirrors: Reflecting on Identity’ we’ve chosen ‘Swans’ by David Kim Whittaker.

Whittaker is a British painter born in Cornwall, where they continue to live and work. Largely self-taught, their paintings often explore the human head as a way of expressing emotions and experiences. Their portraits are intentionally open to interpretation, combining the personal with the universal. Many of the works reflect contrasts such as strength and vulnerability, calm and conflict, and the conscious and subconscious mind.

These themes are rooted in Whittaker's own experience of gender dysphoria. Through painting, they explore personal challenges while seeking to express ideas and emotions that connect with people on a more universal level.
