While many of us were home baking during lockdown, a group of fabulous local artists were busy creating and adapting their work for Winter 2020, Falkirk Community Trust’s first new Callendar House exhibition since the building closed in March 2020. The exhibition was only open for a matter of weeks before we were forced to close the House due to the second COVID-19 lockdown.

However, we are excited to announce that since Callendar House has reopened the exhibition is still on display in the Park Gallery and available to view free of charge until 20 June 2021.

Fish liver oils have been used for centuries by fishing communities in Northern Europe. Today people think of cod liver oil as the main one but this halibut liver oil was dispensed by a chemist in Falkirk. It suggest that you could take it with a lump of sugar, which is probably not a bad idea but fishy sugar must be an acquired taste!

When aerated waters or fizzy drinks first appeared they were stored in earthenware bottles but the gas easily escaped. Glass bottles became the norm but the corks used to close them couldn’t be allowed to dry out or the gas escaped. Shopkeepers for obvious reasons didn’t want to store them on their sides. Then in 1814 William Hamilton invented the torpedo bottle, also called the Hamilton bottle. It gave the shopkeepers no choice but to store them on their sides and gave us some beautiful bottles to collect.

The Tattie Kirk. Dating from 1806, this is arguably he most unusual building in Falkirk. It’s hexagonal shape is certainly different from any other I have seen in Scotland, let alone Falkirk, one theory on it’s shape is that ‘the devil had no corner to hide in’ which I like telling people I show round the town, whether it is true or not I don’t know, but it is on the blue plaque that is attached to the building. More convincing is the notion of the centrality of the preaching of the word with the pulpit as the focal point of the services. The sanctuary was on the first floor with seating for 580 which is astonishing given the appearance of the building from the outside. By 1879 the congregation joined with other splinter groups and became part of the United Presbyterian Church, they moved to a new building in Grahams Road where the retail park is today leaving graveyard and kirk behind. The Grahams Road church was demolished in 1990. The kirk was sold off and used for a variety of purposes and there have been many theories about the name ‘Tattie’. Was the church built on a potato field? Did the minister get part of his stipend in potatoes? The problem here is that the name does not appear until after the congregation was gone. It may therefore come about because the old building was used as a potato store. Or maybe it fell into such a state of disrepair that somebody said “Something needs to be done about that old tattie kirk!” For many years it was part of Sime’s tool shop, when I first moved here I am sure it was a furniture shop, today it has been restored as a beauty parlour. The upper level is rented out as a luxury two bedroom flat. A group of like minded Falkirk Bairns attend to the graveyard and have a page “Friends of the Tattie Kirk Graveyard”.

I walk round the dams regularly and wondered what it looked like before so i did this in minecraft from what old maps and photos i could find on the net as (was shocked at how few there are for a 300+ year old company ) . there is a high degree of artistic licence took a good couple of weeks.
I have just found a reference to someone being fined ten Scots pounds in 1647 "for their absense in Ryding of the said nobill earle his fair of Falkirk haldine at the burgh thairof upone the first day of Maij instant" [The Falkirk & Callendar Regality Court Book 129.8] I thought riding the boundaries was a Borders practice, and I wondered what the above referred to. Please can anyone help?

Just heard that burtons in falkirk to close in January as the owners of the building want to sell it, I'm worried about what's going to happen to the time warp rooms upstairs, will they get ripped out and that'll mean we will loose yet another part of falkirks history
