Looking for another free guided walk idea this Sunday afternoon, 19 September? The well-known and engaging Geoff Bailey, district archaeologist at Falkirk Heritage Falkirk Community Trust, has been in touch for help to publicise a walk he is leading on The Antonine Wall at Rough Castle Roman Fort. Geoff is one of the foremost authorities on the Wall and on so many other aspects of our local history and built heritage.

Walk from Lock 16 starting at the Union Inn to Rough Castle, returning via the woodland walk to the Falkirk Wheel and then along the towpath of the Forth & Clyde Canal. The Wall at Watling Lodge is well preserved and the fort is the best surviving earthwork on the frontier. Guide: Geoff Bailey. Meet at 2pm, no booking required: starting-point is Union Inn, Lock 16, Camelon FK1 4QU.

The date marks the birthday of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius who commissioned the Wall, and forms part of the Falkirk area's Roman week.

Kinneil Museum is now open again :)

27/07/2021

We have been advised today that the nest of ‘wasps’ at Kinneil museum is actually honeybees. Given the importance of honeybees as pollinators we are looking to move the hive out of the museum to somewhere more suitable. The museum will remain closed until we locate a beekeeper to do this for us.

22/07/2021

Unfortunately Kinneil Museum has had to close to attend to a nest of wasps that have settled in the museum. This is causing issues for the team and for our visitors. We’ll reopen as soon as we can. We would advise you to be careful when walking around the outside of the museum in the meantime as there may be high numbers of wasps in the area. We’ll post further updates on the museum reopening when the situation is resolved.

While many of us were home baking during lockdown, a group of fabulous local artists were busy creating and adapting their work for Winter 2020, Falkirk Community Trust’s first new Callendar House exhibition since the building closed in March 2020. The exhibition was only open for a matter of weeks before we were forced to close the House due to the second COVID-19 lockdown.

However, we are excited to announce that since Callendar House has reopened the exhibition is still on display in the Park Gallery and available to view free of charge until 20 June 2021.

Happy Mother’s Day from all the team at Callendar House. We are missing you and wish we could be celebrating with you over one of our fabulous Afternoon Tea’s!
We thought we’d share a special recipe with you instead, our delicious and super easy to make Tea Loaf.

Ingredients 1 measuring cup of strong tea
1 cup sugar (any kind can be used)
2 cups mixed dried fruit
4oz margarine
2 heaped teaspoons mixed spice
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
2 cups self-raising flour
2 large eggs

Method
1.Put first six ingredients into a pan. Bring slowly to the boil, stirring occasionally and then reduce heat and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Leave aside to cool.
2.Add a cup of sieved flour then an egg beating each into the mixture. Repeat. 3.Pour into a large lined loaf tin and bake @160oC for approximately an hour or until a skewer or knife comes out clean from the centre of the loaf.
4.Leave to cool before slicing, delicious served with butter! (A measuring cup or mug can be used throughout for this recipe, stick to the same cup throughout.)

The Tattie Kirk. Dating from 1806, this is arguably he most unusual building in Falkirk. It’s hexagonal shape is certainly different from any other I have seen in Scotland, let alone Falkirk, one theory on it’s shape is that ‘the devil had no corner to hide in’ which I like telling people I show round the town, whether it is true or not I don’t know, but it is on the blue plaque that is attached to the building. More convincing is the notion of the centrality of the preaching of the word with the pulpit as the focal point of the services. The sanctuary was on the first floor with seating for 580 which is astonishing given the appearance of the building from the outside. By 1879 the congregation joined with other splinter groups and became part of the United Presbyterian Church, they moved to a new building in Grahams Road where the retail park is today leaving graveyard and kirk behind. The Grahams Road church was demolished in 1990. The kirk was sold off and used for a variety of purposes and there have been many theories about the name ‘Tattie’. Was the church built on a potato field? Did the minister get part of his stipend in potatoes? The problem here is that the name does not appear until after the congregation was gone. It may therefore come about because the old building was used as a potato store. Or maybe it fell into such a state of disrepair that somebody said “Something needs to be done about that old tattie kirk!” For many years it was part of Sime’s tool shop, when I first moved here I am sure it was a furniture shop, today it has been restored as a beauty parlour. The upper level is rented out as a luxury two bedroom flat. A group of like minded Falkirk Bairns attend to the graveyard and have a page “Friends of the Tattie Kirk Graveyard”.
By popular demand - latest addition to the Falkirk Local History Society webpage:
I walk round the dams regularly and wondered what it looked like before so i did this in minecraft from what old maps and photos i could find on the net as (was shocked at how few there are for a 300+ year old company ) . there is a high degree of artistic licence took a good couple of weeks.
I have just found a reference to someone being fined ten Scots pounds in 1647 "for their absense in Ryding of the said nobill earle his fair of Falkirk haldine at the burgh thairof upone the first day of Maij instant" [The Falkirk & Callendar Regality Court Book 129.8] I thought riding the boundaries was a Borders practice, and I wondered what the above referred to. Please can anyone help?

Just heard that burtons in falkirk to close in January as the owners of the building want to sell it, I'm worried about what's going to happen to the time warp rooms upstairs, will they get ripped out and that'll mean we will loose yet another part of falkirks history
