Dr Julia Neville, an honorary research fellow at Exeter University, led a major five year research project to discover how people lived in our county 100 years ago.

Now that research has been distilled into a talk - entitled Devon in the 1920s: no longer a ‘forgotten’ decade? - to be given by Dr Neville as part of Topsham Museum’s summer lecture series. She brings her expert insights on Devon’s past to Matthews Hall, Topsham, on Thursday May 21.

Doors open 10.30am; lecture begins at 11am. Entrance £6 payable at the door.

It may be 2026 but if you’d like to find out about the 1920’s in Devon then come along to our May Lecture at Matthews Hall on Thursday 21st May at 11 am. 'Devon in the 1920s-no longer a ‘forgotten’ decade?’ Find out what was life like in Devon 100 years ago-by Julia Neville. Doors open at 10.30 am, £6 pay at the door.
In the early 2020s Devon History Society initiated a research programme to explore this. With the help of groups across the county, including Topsham Museum, they were able to look at many different aspects of life: education, farming, housing, and, affecting almost everything, the development of motor transport.

A reminder that our next lecture is this week on Thursday 16th April at 11 am at Matthews Hall. The lecture is on New Research on Stonehenge, our speaker, Dr Sue Greaney, has a new book coming out on 1st May: "Stonehenge: Story of an Icon", published by English Heritage. Stonehenge, and will be available for purchase at the UNESCO World Heritage site and English Heritage's online store. Many bookstores, including online, are taking pre-orders now!

On Wednesday 8th April we have a crafting day in the Museum Riverside Garden. The session will be between 10.30 am and 3.30pm.

A history and heritage expert will reveal new secrets about Stonehenge at a special lecture in Topsham.

Dr Susan Greaney, an Exeter University lecturer and archaeologist, will lift the lid on the latest discoveries about the monument and the surrounding landscape.

Her talk - entitled New sites, new discoveries, new ideas: the last 10 years of research in the Stonehenge landscape - is the first in Topsham Museum’s summer lecture series.

She says: “We’ll look at new findings relating to the origin of the stones, discoveries of settlements and monuments in the area.

“There will also be revelations about the people buried at Stonehenge and information from recent historical research.”

Dr Greaney is one of the country’s foremost experts in her field.

She’s worked as lead curator for the Stonehenge visitor centre, has undertaken research on archaeological sites for English Heritage, and has been involved in a major exhibition at Tintagel Castle.

Look what just landed on our doorstep! Topsham Museum has made the pages of Private Eye. Sadly this is due to the ongoing and unresolved issues regarding the renovations which has led to the closure of the Museum for a second year. Exeter City Council’s cloak of secrecy over what, if anything, it will do to fulfil its obligations as Topsham Museum landlord, has reached the pages of (see below). Watch out around town next week for questions to pose to council candidates in the upcoming ECC elections. We’re SO grateful for the continued community support at our various outreach events while 25 Strand remains closed.
