Thank you Trudy for your contribution to Apple Day - it’s always a joy to have you in our gardens enthusing our visitors!! 🍎🌱

Out of Office - after a very busy time I am taking a few days away from the inside and outside offices.

John Muir captures it 'keep close to nature's heart...and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods and wash your spirit clean'

I will be back on line later in the week.

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather yesterday and came along to our Apple Day. It was lovely to see so many people enjoying our crafting, music, meeting our guest traditional craftspeople and pressing apples - we hope you enjoyed your juice and stuffed quinces once you got home ! ( do drop some pictures of your finished quinces in the comments below)
We are sorry we had to cut the fun a bit short when the wind threatened to blow everyone away, but hope to see you again next year at one of our unique special events. We’ve rain proofed Apple Day at Epworth Old Rectory tomorrow - everything is now undercover so drop in to visit us and take part in lots of activities, listen to some great local musicians and buy some unique products from our stall holders.

Everyone is warmly invited to join us for this special return of Apple Day and enjoy a day of harvest traditions, creativity and community at this historic house. Visit from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

Why did Samuel Wesley wear a wig? Wigs were a popular fashion accessory for men during the eighteenth century, up until the introduction of the Hair Powder Act in 1795. Wigs were worn for a number of reasons, including covering up baldness, but they were ultimately a symbol of status, wealth and sophistication. The full-bottomed wig favoured by Samuel was popular during the early eighteenth century but fell out of favour due to their weight. Wigs were usually made from human hair, goat hair or horse hair and often scented with lavender or orange flower water. To give structure, a pomade made out of animal fat was applied.
To see an example of the wig worn by Samuel Wesley, visit the Old Rectory and see it displayed in Samuel's study. We are open this week Thursday to Saturday, 10.30-3.30. Please note, we close for the winter season November to April.

On Saturday we’re inviting you to have a go and make a stuffed quince - this is based on a recipe first found in an early 16th century medieval manuscript and suggests filling quinces (which are related to both apples and pears) with bone marrow and currents before poaching them. This does sound a bit odd, so why not pop in to our Apple Day to make your own and see (and taste) for yourself.
We will be trying out this unique recipe in addition to Lord Cumberland Pudding and quince jelly and handing out recipe sheets for you to try everything at home and also finish off poaching your stuffed fruit.
