Story no. 506: Thomas LINES 1851-1908. A plasterer. Thomas and his wife Clara lost their third born son George...aged 3 and a half months. As reported at a coroner’s inquest, he had been left by Clara at a nursery in St James’s Terrace, Notting Dale in the morning in order that she might go out to work. She had been called to the nursery in the afternoon and found her child dead. A doctor deposed that the cause of death was convulsions due to natural causes. Clara said that had her infant been the Queen’s child; it could not have had more attention. Later, after more loss we learn that Clara Lines, had jumped from Hammersmith Bridge into the Thames. A policeman who happened to be close by jumped in after her and managed to get her to shore. She was taken to the West London Hospital in a serious condition. The report concluded by noting that her husband was an inmate of Fulham Workhouse and that there were several children. We have to conclude that this was Thomas’s wife driven to desperate measures by her circumstances.

Story no.504 The simple story of Elizabeth Herring nee Payn. Like most of those buried in Horton Cemetery, hers was an ordinary family life. We do not know if her children of friends visited her. She had only a short stay before dying. Elizabeth was buried in 1902, just three years after the cemetery opened. She was laid to rest in grave 82.

There are 9000 buried in the cemetery.

We hope to be hosting a heritage event on September 12th in Epsom.

This will give all our followers chance to learn more about Horton Cemetery. Announcements will be made here as soon as plans are firmed up.

The talk in Sidbury Shropshire is bring given by a researcher who lives there. We have followers and researchers all over the country.

Yes it is a great idea for us to do something similar locally.

A talk by one of our researchers. This promises to be a great event.

The Friends of Horton Cemetery were approached by Charles McNab’s great granddaughter, who was working on her family tree.

She said, “My family was always told that Charles McNab died in Dunkirk, however, it appears he died 2 years after the war stopped.”

Our researcher was able to identify Charles in the archives and to piece together his life. He was able to tell the family that Charles had actually died in Long Grove Asylum in Epsom.
