The Water Fountain in Epping High Street just over 100 Years ago. The building on the left called Squires was owned and lived in by the Cottis Family, who were the towns main employer. Their foundry was behind Squires and employed hundreds of men.

Hi everyone, North Weald Airfield Museum will be having their open day on 6th September 11 till 5pm it’s always a great day! My son is a volunteer there, all the volunteers work so hard to keep the museum going so please come along. If you have your own classic car to display feel free to bring it along. This year they have a licensed bar as well as the burger/hot dog Stall all cooked on a BBQ, other stalls. My sister has a stall selling her beautiful handmade jewellery so please come along and support the museum.

We are desperately looking for a few straw bales or seating for the day, if you can help please let me know

Wake Arms, Epping Road

Letters in the Essex Countryside magazine state that the pub name is believed to have derived from the Wake family which claims descent from Hereward Leofricson, Lord of Bourne, commonly known as Hereward the Wake - the Wake meaning last of the Saxons. The Wakes were a well known Essex landowning family and ownership of this manor descended to Sire William Wake in 1755.
The pub was rebuilt in about 1932, until then, a massive sign on the opposite side of the Epping Road bore on both sides a heraldic representation of the Wake family Arms. One account tells how the Wake family used to block up the natural springs used to by picnickers at High Beech in order to 'encourage' the use of their pub until the authorities stepped in and banned the practice. Writing in 1887, Miller Christy the pub sign historian stated that the Wake Arms was over 40 years old in 1887.

It was one of a number of pubs in and around Epping Forest with associations with Dick Turpin, the Highwayman. The pub had items of Turpin's clothing on display for some years - presumably because Turpin stayed there prior to being caught and left them there?

The pub was demolished in the 1980`s and the site gave way to the "Old Orleans" and then "Miller & Carter"

The Wright Family used to live in Prospect House, High Street Epping. They ran a School from the building which still stands today, and is used by Coles the Tailors.
Robert (a gardener), and his wife Eliza are pictured here, with their 7 Daughters, Eliza, Sarah, Ada, Caroline, Emily, Edith and Lilian. At the time this photo was taken, the 2 eldest Daughters were teaching.
This photo would probably have been taken at the rear of the property.

Pretloves is well known for being a Removals Company, but Charles Pretlove was originally a greengrocer. This early photo shows he was already begining the transition from Greengrocery to Removals.
In 1911 Charles Pretlove lived in Coopersale Common, with his Wife, 5 Daughters and 2 Sons.

Palmers Hill traffic lights, left to Harlow and right to St Margaret’s Hospital and North Weald. The water trough which stood there for years is apparently in someone’s garden somewhere! Years ago this part of The Plain was treeless right to Epping Lake, seen clearly in the second photograph where St Margaret’s would be to the left of the photograph. This part of plain was once home to Epping Cricket Club until 1896.

After chapel people would go to a huge oak tree called The Gospel Oak to sing hymns.
