I’m really enjoying reading the book, Still, which reflects how I am feeling about making photographs.
This image was made during and interview with , we were talking about what inspires me to make images - I discussed connection, text, emotion and listening to the subject, all while rolling this Buddha Nut in my hands. Making photographs is about being intentional and curious, feeling into the subject with your heart and allowing that to come through. The choice to make black and white images is intentional because frankly Colour annoys me in my own work I find it loud, brash and distracting. The simple lighting again intentionally chosen to reflect the way the subject felt in my hands. The ratio of space to subject is chosen because this is a seed, it needs space to grow. When I received this idea of space and opening myself up for growth it came directly from the seed, through time handling it. Mindfulness in photography is all about paying attention to what is being offered to you and then using your experience and knowledge to translate it into an image that reflects the connection you had with the subject. It is not about the photograph being good or bad, it is always about what caught and held your attention. Stop judging pictures and yourself as not good enough and ask yourself does this reflect the experience of the moment
