Elizabeth (Oliver's wife) faced criticism in her life and faced satirical attacks during her lifetime, often referred to as “Joan” in royalist propaganda. Despite this she was known very well for her intelligence and influence in her husband (Oliver Cromwell's) political career, she was also a very good cook with a cookbook still around to this day; partly inspired by recipes she would have prepared in the kitchen here at Oliver Cromwell’s House.

Elizabeth Cromwell was born Elizabeth Steward. She was the daughter of William Stewart, who had inherited from his uncle, the Prior of Ely, leases of abbey lands in the early days of the Reformation. The leases passed to Elizabeth's childless brother Thomas and, in 1636, to her son Oliver, which is how Oliver and his family came to live here in Ely, at Oliver Cromwell’s House.

Elizabeth Cromwell was the second daughter of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, and his wife, Elizebeth Cromwell, and reportedly interceded with her father for royalist prisoners. She was very well known for being Oliver Cromwells favorite child. She spent her formulative years here, at Oliver Cromwell’s House – some of the activities she would have enjoyed are recreated in ‘Mrs. Cromwell’s Room. After Cromwell created a peerage for her husband, John Claypole, she was known as Lady Claypole. She was buried in Westminster Abbey. It is said that her death caused Cromwell’s health to decline, eventually leading to his death at fifty nine years old.
