Old School Gallery • Gallery G8 • Weekends 1, 2, 3 & 4

Founded in 2017, Old School Gallery & Guesthouse exists to showcase Korean visual arts including drawing, painting, print-making and textiles. We aim to support Korean artists in the UK by providing opportunities for cultural exchange with artists based in Korea, and to produce at least one collaborative project per year leading to exhibitions in both countries.

Visit them in Littleport on the first four weekends in July.

울컥아리랑 (‘Griefstruck’) July 2015.

For me아리랑 (‘Arirang’) signifies Korean peoples’ spirit, heart and humour - the summation of our fragmented inheritance.

The piece is a commentary on the recent disastrous ferry accident off the south-west coast of Korea in which 304 people (mainly children) lost their lives. Such tragedies leave me feeling Korean society is degraded by a lack of genuine concern for one’s fellows. Through this piece I wish to re-connect with this concern and so help renewal.
Each piece of driftwood represents one victim. The pieces on the floor below represent the nine as yet un-recovered victims.

KAA 2015 ‘아리랑’- 강경신Magenta Kang

Concept : 울컥 아리랑 ( grief-stricken arirang) - 한국의 대표적 민요이자 지방별로 다양한 아리랑이 전해져 오고 있다. 나에게 있어 아리랑 이미지는 한국인의 삶과 얼과 한과 회학들을 고스란히 담은 민족의 유산으로 본다. 최근 나는 작년에 일어난 한 사건을 통해 그동안 한국 사회에 대한 무관심이 위기에 당면하였다고 본다. 그러므로 서로에 대한 관심만이 한국 사회와 우리와 나를 지킬 수 있다는 것을 작업으로 표현하고자 한다./
작업노트 중에서--- 세월호를 생각하면 할수록 대한 민국에서 사는 애들이 넘 불쌍하다. 억울하게 죽은 아이들 생각하면 가슴이 멍멍해지고 울컥해 미치겠다.
아직도 그냥 눈물이 뚝뚝 떨어진다.
누가… 왜…이들을 죽게 내 버려두었을까…한명조차도 안 살려보려 했고 …
그저…아이들에게 미안하고 …
어른인게 부끄럽다.

Four times now that I have stayed during my monthly working weeks in this quiet and peaceful flat. Magenta is a very kind and attentive host, making every effort to make me feel comfortable so that it really feels like a home away from home. Fruit and some other provisions are provided and I always find some lovely flowers waiting for me. Magenta is happy to share information on the area, tips on restaurants and current events. The flat is light and spacious with the original wooden floor and tastefully decorated with Magenta’s own beautiful art and crafts. She is a working artist and has frequently exhibitions in the area. She and her husband are also great cooks and are happy to answer any questions about Korean cuisine. The good size kitchen is equipped with all essentials, Wi-Fi is working well and, despite the spaciousness of the flat, it is warm and cosy. A double door leads to a lovely little garden, surely a sun trap in summer. Shops (one small COOP in walking distance and open till late and a bigger COOP slightly further away) are within reach. Parking is not a problem in front of the church and its grounds on the other side of the road. I will certainly continue to stay in Magenta’s flat during my regular visits, and a big thank you to Magenta, her husband and her son for their always warm welcome.
