second painting of „Telling the bees“ now sold 🌈🐝🐝🌈

The custom of “telling the bees” is an old folk tradition found primarily in parts of England, Wales, Ireland, and later in New England in the United States. It reflects a worldview in which bees were considered members of the household rather than mere livestock.

The basic practice was simple: when someone in the household died (or sometimes married or departed for a long journey), the beekeeper would visit each hive and quietly tell the bees what had happened. In many places, the hives were also draped with black cloth, gently tapped, or turned slightly. The message might be as straightforward as:

“Little bees, your master is dead.”

Or, if a new head of the household had taken over:

“Your master has gone, but here is your new master.”

Where did the tradition come from?

There is no single known origin, but historians and folklorists believe it emerged from a blend of several older beliefs.
