Delve into the works of Cliff Rowe as our season of talks on Comrades in Art continues this Wednesday 3 June, which will see Dr Joe Thornberry unpack the hidden content of key works by Cliff Rowe on display in Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism.

Rowe was a prime mover in forming the Artist International Association, a tireless campaigner, and an ever-thoughtful observer of a world in turmoil. As his paintings and designs from the 1920s to the 1960s attest, he was also an artist with a singular continuously developing vision.

Wednesday 3 June, 2.00pm
£12 (incl. entry to exhibition)

Skills Opportunity for 18 to 25s! Project Relic is a paid, fun, hands-on opportunity for five young people aged 18 to 25 to get up close with real local history. Over eight weeks (on Tuesdays), you’ll work together in a friendly, supportive setting to explore the Eastbourne Local History and Archaeological Collections. You will learn how to handle, catalogue, and care for genuine artefacts, along with approaches to sharing historical finds with the public.

You will be supported by Towner’s Heritage and Learning teams, and working in a new collections store in Hampden Park, Eastbourne.

With plenty of chances to discover hidden stories and build practical skills, it’s a unique way to gain experience, meet like-minded people, and be part of caring for Eastbourne’s ancient past.

Find out more and apply via the jobs and opportunities page of our website: https://townereastbourne.org.uk/get-involved/jobs-and-work-experience

Applications will close at midday on Friday 26 June.

The most comprehensive exhibition on the anti-fascist Artists International Association ever staged, Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism, at Towner Eastbourne.

The AIA was established in 1933 to unify artists against fascism and war, rallying comrades across Europe during the Spanish Civil War and efforts to overcome the rise of fascist General Francisco Franco. The artists involved worked across a range of styles, and the Association also focused on wider access to art, through affordable lithograph prints and mural commissions.

The exhibition at Towner is based on extensive new archival and collections-based research conducted by author and curator Andy Friend and published by Thames & Hudson in his book, Comrades in Art: Artists against Fascism, 1933-1943, with a foreword by Frances Spalding. It builds on Andy Friend's recent display in Tate Britain's Marie-Louise Von Motesiczky Archive Gallery (July 2024 to April 2026), exploring the founding of the AIA through archive material in their collection.

Helen Binyon, The Flower Show, for the AIA Everyman Prints, 1939. The Artists International Association was established in 1933 to unify artists against fascism and war, rallying comrades across Europe during the Spanish Civil War and efforts to overcome the rise of fascist General Francisco Franco.

In 1939 lithography would become central to the AIA Everyman Prints series intended to bring original art at affordable prices to a mass market. They wanted to do for artists what the Penguin paperback was doing for writers and were inspired by an initiative of the American Artists Congress.

The ambitions evident when Everyman was launched were not fulfilled—initially strong marketing through Boots and Marks & Spencer faltered, paper rationing cut supplies, and the churn of war meant previous volunteer printers were unavailable.

The AIA’s major 1940 exhibition was delayed by a week after two incendiary bombs fell through the gallery roof but once opened was a notable success.

Now on show at Towner in Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism, the most comprehensive exhibition on the anti-fascist Artists International Association ever staged.

Celebrate international cinema at Towner! We're very excited to host a new series, Crossroads, which brings a bold selection of contemporary Caribbean films to independent cinemas across South East England this spring.

Running from 8 May to 18 June 2026, the series presents standout titles from the Trinidad+Tobago Film Festival (TTFF), offering UK audiences a rare opportunity to experience visually striking, politically resonant, and formally inventive work from one of the most underrepresented regions in global cinema.

Crossroads has been conceived as both a cultural exchange and a long-term audience development initiative – building connections between Caribbean filmmakers, UK venues, and local communities.

Our first Crossroads screening will feature Kanaval on Thursday 14 May, 7.00pm. Find out more about the series and book tickets on our website: https://townereastbourne.org.uk/about/blog/trinidad-tobago-film-festival-at-towner
