Restoration work at Priory House in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, has revealed 800 years of history. 🔎

The repair of the Grade II* listed building, which we’re funding in partnership with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, has uncovered medieval doorways, including nationally significant wall paintings, historic decoration schemes and potential evidence of superstitious rituals.

Priory House survives as part of the original Dunstable Priory. Recent radiocarbon dating confirms the building’s vaulted ceiling dates to the 13th century.

The building’s earliest layout has been discovered, including a doorway that once linked the High Street to the Priory grounds, and the location of a central hearth that would have warmed the room above.

These findings will help shape how the story of Priory House, and Dunstable itself, is shared when the building reopens to visitors next year.
