Hands up - who loves beachcombing?

There’s something rather special about wandering the shoreline and seeing what the tide has left behind. Sea glass on East Beach, beautifully shaped pebbles and shells - or, if you’re lucky, a fossil or two at Barns Ness.

Artist Portia Knight has taken this love of looking closely at the shoreline and turned it into an art form. Originally from New Zealand and now with a base on Scotland’s north-east coast, Portia was drawn to the Victorian tradition of seaweed hunting. At low tide, she combs the rock pools for drift or ‘cast’ seaweed, leaving anything still growing in place.

Back home, each piece is carefully arranged and pressed onto watercolour paper for at least four weeks. The finished works reveal the beautiful shapes, colours and textures of seaweed we might otherwise overlook.

We have a collection of Portia’s original seaweed pressings in the gallery, alongside a lovely range of her cards.

We are in great company. So many brilliant independents to choose from.

The August blog on Visit East Lothian is all about the wonderful, independent shops right across East Lothian. Whether they are set in some of our picturesque, historic high streets or in more rural locations, the wealth of choice is quite amazing and there's something to suit all tastes, interests and budgets.

There's a huge range of gift shops and artisan markets, food markets, pet supplies, ladies' clothing and accessories boutiques, bookshops, homeware, lifestyle products, jewellers, art galleries and of course - all things food and drink.

There is a deep blue shopfront at 84 Dunbar High Street that makes people slow down on the pavement. The Found Gallery is one of the county’s quietest treasures, and behind it are Hannah and Matthew, who swapped careers buying mass-produced goods by the container load in London for a High Street gallery full of work you will not see anywhere else.

We have written up how they came to Dunbar, what you will find inside, from original coastal paintings to silver jewellery and back-garden-kiln ceramics, and the roughly 150 artists and makers behind the shelves. Hannah calls it the joy of the find, and the shop is built around it.

Some days stay with you long after you’ve returned to shore.

A few weeks ago we joined BlueWild Boat Tours for an unforgettable day exploring Bass Rock and the Isle of May - two extraordinary places right on our doorstep.
As a local Dunbar business, Blue Wild are creating a real destination experience, bringing people out onto the water to discover the wildlife, history and wild beauty of Scotland’s east coast. And honestly, it’s something special.

First stop: Bass Rock. A dramatic volcanic island rising from the sea, home to the world’s largest gannet colony. It’s one of those sights that never gets old, no matter how many times you see it.
Then on to the Isle of May. Wildlife, history and wildflowers all in one place - razorbills on the cliffs, kittiwakes calling overhead, cormorants and shags drying their wings in the sun, and seals basking lazily along the shore.

We even spotted a few puffins, though they were keeping a low profile. It was just before puffling season, so most were tucked safely in their burrows or out at sea - which really only gives us another reason to go back.

One of the best parts of the day was the feeling of having time: a small group, space to wander, and guides full of brilliant stories about the wildlife, geology and history of both islands.
Scotland’s wild east coast never stops inspiring us - and it inspires our artists too.
