The magnificent Ruthwell Cross—one of the most famous medieval monuments in all of Western Europe—was meticulously restored by the Rev. Henry Duncan himself!

While serving as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Dr. Duncan took it upon himself to rebuild and protect this stunning late 7th-century Anglo-Saxon treasure.

Rev. Henry Duncan once risked absolutely everything—his career, his income, and his family home—to stand up for what he believed in.

Throughout his life, Duncan fiercely opposed "patronage" (the legal right of wealthy landowners to force a minister onto a local congregation). When the Church of Scotland reached a breaking point over this state interference, he didn't compromise his values.

Alongside his two sons, son-in-law, and stepson, he walked out of the established Kirk to join the Free Church of Scotland. It was a financially devastating move that left his family temporarily homeless and unable to send their children to state schools—but Duncan’s conviction never wavered. Within two years, he fought back and built a brand new church and manse at Mount Kedar!

At a cost of eighteen shillings and sixpence (about 82p) very expensive for the time, a chair commissioned for Henry Duncan was completed.
You can sit in that chair when you visit us at the Henry Duncan Museum.
The chair has been here for almost two hundred years and is a sturdy chair, if not an elegant piece of furniture.

Long before social media or the internet, there was the printed word.

Did you know that Rev. Duncan founded, edited, and published two local newspapers that are still running and keeping our communities informed to this very day?

In 1809, he launched the Dumfries & Galloway Courier, followed later by the Dumfries & Galloway Standard. He used these pages not just to share the news, but to champion social reform, education, and savings banks for everyday working people across the region.

Now, we’re giving you the chance to step into the shoes of a 19th-century editor!

When you visit the Henry Duncan Savings Banks Museum, you can discover the fascinating history behind the Courier and the Standard. Even better—you can roll up your sleeves and try your hand at printing your very own souvenir front page on our original printing press!

It’s a hands-on piece of living history that the whole family will love.

Did you know that one of the most important Anglo-Saxon monuments in Europe was pieced back together right here in our region?

The Ruthwell Cross dates back to the 8th century and is a masterpiece of early medieval art, featuring incredible carvings. But by the 19th century, this priceless piece of history lay shattered and scattered in pieces.

Enter Reverend Henry Duncan.

Driven by a passion to preserve our local heritage, Rev. Duncan painstakingly gathered the fragments. To ensure everything fit perfectly before reassembling the actual stone monument in 1823, he meticulously designed and built a precise wax scale replica. It was a pioneering feat of historical restoration for its time.
