Sit in the Chair That Built History!

At a cost of eighteen shillings and sixpence (about 82p in today's money)—a very expensive sum at the time— this is a special chair commissioned for the Reverend Henry Duncan.

While it may not be the most elegant piece of furniture in the world, the fact that it has remained standing in the Society Room for almost two hundred years is proof of just how sturdy it is!

Now, you have the rare opportunity to step back in time, pull up a seat, and sit where Henry Duncan himself once sat as he changed the course of social history.

Come and take your seat in history this week:

Can You Help Us Solve a Historic Mystery?

We have just acquired a fantastic new (to us!) addition to our collection: a vintage Gestetner Rotary Cyclostyle No. 15 Duplicator, which we believe dates from around 1920.

Long before modern printers and photocopiers existed, machines like this were the cutting edge of office technology, used to print documents, newsletters, and circulars by hand.

It needs a good clean and some basic maintenance, which we love. While we know what it is and what it is supposed to do, we don't actually know how to operate it!

That’s where you come in:

Do you have experience with vintage printing equipment?
Have you ever operated a Gestetner duplicator?
Or would you like to join us in the challenge of figuring this beauty out?

If so, drop us a comment below or send us a message

Discover the Story Behind the Ruthwell Cross

Did you know that the Reverend Henry Duncan played a pivotal role in saving one of Scotland’s greatest historic treasures?

In the early 19th century, Rev. Henry Duncan painstakingly gathered the broken pieces of the 8th-century Ruthwell Cross—which had been dismantled during the Reformation—and reassembled this extraordinary Anglo-Saxon monument, securing its survival for generations to come.

Beyond founding the world’s first commercial savings bank, Duncan’s passion for local heritage, geology, and history transformed the landscape of Ruthwell.

Step inside the Henry Duncan Savings Bank Museum to discover the full story of this remarkable man, his pioneering vision, and the legacy he left behind.
