How's this for a ?

The Lady Caroline was a ship that carried emigrants from Warrenpoint to North America during the Famine. The Lady Caroline was described in 1847 as a fine ship β€œfound in Bread-Stuffs, water and fuel, agreeably to Act of Parliament, and as a large number of Passengers are now engaged, immediate application will be necessary to secure berth”. The ship arrived at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on Friday July 23rd. In 1847, Warrenpoint was a major port of emigration with 1,947 people travelling to Canada, 448 of these passengers went to New Brunswick. A further 1,009 people emigrated to America through Warrenpoint in the same year.

The poster for the Lady Caroline is on display in Newry and Mourne Museum which offers free entry and free audio guides for all those visiting the museum.

Does anyone have any fond memories of this place?

This week's features a shop which had a bar, farm, funeral and undertaking business and post office.

James and Mary Elizabeth Gorman owned a shop in Broadway, Belfast, but in 1921 they decided to settle into the Mayobridge local community and the business was eventually taken over by Seamus, one of their children.

From the 1930s to the 1960s the shop also had a mobile van that delivered groceries to isolated homes and farms. This was an important service, as there were very few cars in the area until the 1960s.

Funeral and undertaking is now the focus for the Gorman family business, particularly since the closure of the grocery shop, and the relocation of the post office.

Now the building houses Laverty’s Bar and Lounge
