For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we have a fantastic image of The Falkland Arms Public House, taken at the corner of Falkland Road and Hampstead Road, c. 1913. This location was used as the termination point of a bus route to Dorking from Clapham Common - to the right hand side of the photo, an early open top double-decker bus can be seen. Here, buses would turn around and wait near the public house for the journey back to London. The fountain to the right hand side was installed in 1887, but was removed during the blackout of the Second World War as a traffic hazard.

This week we were pleased to welcome Gert Geluk from the Netherlands to the Museum to look at our display and some of our considerable archives on Ralph Vaughan Williams. Gert was the Artistic Director of the renowned annual International Festival Vocallis in the province of Limburg (capital Maastricht) for 10 years He has a ‘soft spot’This for RVW’s romantic works and was especially pleased to be able to briefly see inside Leith Hill Place including RVW’s personal Broadwood upright piano, which he acquired in 1905 and used to compose ‘The Lark Ascending’, among other famous works.
After the visit to Dorking, Gert was off by train to visit places associated with Holst, Arthur Bax and Elgar.

On this Day: 22 May 1907 – Birth of the actor, director and manager Sir Laurence Olivier at Wathen Road in Dorking. Olivier’s father was curate at St Martins and had run a school in Dorking. The family left when Laurence was only two but he retained links with the town. He went on to become probably Britain’s best known actor in the 1940s and 50s, starring in Hollywood films and was instrumental in the establishment of the National Theatre.
The image shows Olivier's father, the Rev Gerard Olivier from the Museum's collection.

Happy Throwback Thursday! This week we have a great image taken from the bottom of the High Street, showing Pump Corner of the left and the junction with West Street in the centre. Also on the left is the premises of milliners M&F Gumbrell. Though this photograph was taken c.1920, this sight is very familiar to anyone who knows Dorking! Check back next week for more historical photos of Dorking.
