Some recent life drawings - just in case you thought I’d become totally obsessed with sunflowers!

It’s a year this month that we finally got the keys to our new house here in sunny Dorset. Unbelievable! Time has flown by whilst we explore our new surroundings and work to make this bland white house with enormous windows, into our home. I seem to have been sewing never-ending curtains - literally, they’re 3 metres long!

However, we are getting there, slowly. For some unaccountable reason things take us longer to do these days😉. Anyway, I’m pleased to say my studio is coming on - just the electrics, plumbing, flooring and heating…..to do😩 I’ll post some progress pics soon.

I’d decided to have a break from painting whilst making a home was paramount, but after 3 months I was getting twitchy fingers. Imagine my excitement when I discovered Abbotsbury Studio just 20mins away, where runs life drawing sessions! So here’s a sample of the drawing that’s been helping to keep me sane. I must also tell you that the journey to Abbotsbury is through the most breathtaking countryside- a joyful bonus!

Well what do you know….. all my struggles in the great outdoors have been rewarded by winning not just one, but two prizes! One from , and an unexpected second prize from the Farmer who hosts this wonderful event in their spectacular sunflower fields. Happy days! 🌻🌻🌻 Many thanks to all those involved - the money raised from this event goes to Dorset County Hospital Charity Fund in aid of the Emergency Department Appeal.

Carrying on the sunflower theme, I spent sunny Saturday painting in a field of sunflowers. Way out of my comfort zone here. Not normally one for painting outside, I went armed with hat, shades, sun cream, insect repellent, food, water …… then there’s the paints, brushes, easel, seat, canvases…..and I had to climb a hill with that lot! Positively exhausting before I’d even put brush to canvas! I am full of admiration for regular plein air painters.
However, the sun shone brightly and the sunflowers smiled all day! A great day and thanks to all those lovely volunteers at Art in Poundbury for organising here in sunny Dorset .

Happy days! My jug of sunflowers painting sold last week and is now glowing in a smart white kitchen. Such sunny flowers that are everywhere right now, especially here in Dorset😊

Moving house involves hundreds of boxes. When they’re full of books, a bookcase is a priority, especially in a house with no shelves!

So here is the little ground floor room we made into a library. It’s the royal ‘we’, John’s the clever one - I did the important job of supervising, and taking photos 😬.
In my defence, I was making curtains at the time and providing sustenance for the worker of course!

We used standard IKEA billy bookcases plus single extensions above - 2 above each one. Each one was painted before fitting and of course the shelves painted too. A platform was built first, to raise the bookcases above the skirting board. The bookcases were measured out and gradually fixed in place, leaving gaps for the wiring. Next we worked out where to have the lights (trying hard not to fall out!). The joins and gaps left for wiring were covered with reeded moulding - the ‘secret’ ingredient to elevate the whole look, along with the cornice to finish the top.

So many decisions to make along the way, not least the quantity and positioning of the shelves. But we got there, the boxes have gone and we have a cosy room to hunker down with a good book! 😌

Our last walk before leaving beautiful Provence. The last month has sped by but I feel so lucky to have been in this magical place, enjoying the milder weather and sunshine. The air was so clear and the sky a brilliant blue against the subdued green of the pines and there was just the slightest topping of snow on the distant mountains. I shall miss the Salukis - such characters, - these are my two faithful followers, Affra and Jazzy whilst the hooligans, Pasha and Willow race around the forest like lunatics. They all collapse in the sunshine when we get home.
