We're excited to be hosting a new four-week art-themed summer school for young people aged 12 - 15 at Studio KIND!

This year's workshops will be led by local artist Nicky Ruddick and will be focused on the theme of Artivism - exploring how art can challenge, protest and campaign for change. We’ll look at the work of radical artists from around the world and making our own artworks, learning different techniques whilst also thinking of fun ways to express ourselves!

During the four sessions, the group will explore the concept, examine its history with real examples from art history/ contemporary art and create their own protest art about subjects they are passionate about.

Summer School will take place on Mondays between 3rd August - 24th August, 13:30 - 16:00. Sessions can be booked individually or for all 4 weeks.

Take a look around our current exhibition, I Think This is Where I Live
by Jess Scott ➡️
Throughout the exhibition, Jess explores the intersection of identity, memory, and place - and the grief when one is lost. Obsessed with how we record and are recorded, how we view and are viewed, their practice experiments with photography and film mediums as a way of exploring narrative.
Inspired by John Berger’s 'A Fortunate Man', thinking about where they exist in their own body, this exhibition comes as the artist’s grandmother developed vascular dementia. The film and photographic works are made up of a frantic attempt to capture and preserve the family home as it is emptied and returned to the council after 80 years. Conversations became shorter, and places and timelines became muddled, almost as if her life had been turned on its end and was being viewed all at once.
'I think that’s where I live, just under and behind my eyes' - John Berger, A Fortunate Man: The Story of a Country Doctor
This exhibition is the fourth solo exhibition brought to Studio KIND by a KARST studioholder. The exchange encourages artistic collaboration across North Devon and Plymouth, and supports Studio KIND's ambitions to ensure that North Devon is connected with exciting and critically engaged dialogues across the South West, strengthened by KARST's invaluable organisational support.
Come and explore the exhibition; we’re open 12:00 - 17:00, Tuesday - Saturday!

The longest day of the year deserves a celebration!

At Studio KIND we’re marking the Summer Solstice with Wicker Man–themed shenanigans: a blend of folklore vibes, immersive creativity and hands-on fun designed to celebrate light, nature, and community in full midsummer bloom.

Bring a bottle, your drawing materials, and your dancing shoes!

Taking inspiration from the 1973 film The Wicker Man, we’ll mark the longest day of the year with extravagant costumes, the enchanting music of Gabby Young and much merriment.

Step into the immersive world of Summerisle. Slightly strange, joyful, and wonderfully surreal. Bring something to drink, your friends and colleagues and perhaps a costume if you’re feeling bold and join in the celebration of midsummer magic.

Saturday 20th June, 19:00 - 21:00

Obsessed with how we record and are recorded, how we view and are viewed, their practice experiments with photography and film mediums as a way of exploring narrative. The exhibition was made in collaboration with KARST in Plymouth. This exchange encourages artistic collaboration across North Devon and Plymouth, and supports Studio KIND's ambitions to ensure that North Devon is connected with exciting and critically engaged dialogues across the South West, strengthened by KARST's invaluable organisational support.

Join photographer and teacher Elsie Garner in exploring one of photography’s oldest printing processes. Learn to create botanical and object-based prints using sunlight, chemistry, and natural materials. You will journey through the history of this camera-less process and discover the process from start to finish.

The workshop includes at least two hours of uninterrupted creative flow, allowing you the freedom to experiment, play, and create a series of your own unique prints.

You are encouraged to bring personal items to incorporate into your work. Objects that work beautifully include flowers, leaves, shells, lace, jewellery, glass, buttons, twigs, transparent materials, and other flat or semi-transparent treasures.

Alongside the classic deep Prussian Blue tones of traditional Cyanotypes, there will be an opportunity to transform your prints using natural tannin dyes such as beetroot, tea, and coffee, as well as Hydrogen Peroxide to intensify and alter tones. These organic interventions create rich, earthy variations and unexpected colour palettes unique to each print.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with approximately 3–5 original Cyanotype prints in A4 and A5 sizes, alongside the knowledge and confidence to continue exploring the process independently.

Sunday 7th June, 10.00-13.00
